The idea for the ugly doll originated from two couples at the New York Academy of Arts. After 9/11, Kim Sang-min from South Korea returned to Korea, and David Hovins, who was far away in New York, missed him a lot. So David Hovins began to write letters to Kim Sang-min. In the letter, he would draw a small monster named wage to make his girlfriend happy. Wage is a little orange monster in an apron and a hard worker. One Christmas, Kim Sang-min sewed the sage into a rag doll and called it "uglydoll", and the first ugly doll was born. In the years that followed, the ugly dolls gradually developed into a big family, and had their own original comics, short films, and muppets.
