The IOC announced on August 29 local time that Jacques Logue, former president of the International Olympic Committee, died at the age of 79. The IOC is saddened by his death. From 2001 to 2013, Logue served as the eighth president of the International Olympic Committee. In his closing remarks at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Logue said the Beijing Olympics were a truly "unparalleled" Olympics. Logue is a Belgian sailing and rugby player. As a sailing athlete, he competed in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, the 1972 Munich Olympics and the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. Logue is also a surgeon with a degree in sports medicine. The IOC said that in honor of Logue, the IOC headquarters, the Olympic Museum and all IOC properties will be lowered to half-mast for five days. The IOC invites all national Olympic committees and international federations to join the commemoration. After the private family ceremony, a public memorial service will be held later this year.
