Tong Jianming met with Chief Justice Zhang Juneng of the HkSAR Court of Final Appeal and his party

Beijing, 19 May (Xinhua) -- On the afternoon of 19 May, Tong Jianming, deputy secretary of the party leading group and executive deputy procurator general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, met with Zhang Juneng, chief judge of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Court of Final Appeal, and his party in Beijing.

On behalf of Procurator General Zhang Jun, Tong Jianming welcomed Zhang Junneng and his entourage on their visit and congratulated Zhang Juneng on his new duties. He said that with the strong support of the central government, the Hong Kong SAR Government has made steady administration and actively taken measures to prevent and control the epidemic, alleviate people's difficulties, restore the economy, and stabilize the overall social situation, and achieved positive results. It is hoped that the judicial organs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will fully and accurately understand and implement the principle of "one country, two systems" and make new contributions to ensuring Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability.

Tong Jianming briefed the guests on the theoretical, institutional and practical achievements in the construction of the rule of law in the mainland under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, as well as the functions, procuratorial reform and procuratorial work of the procuratorial organs in the mainland. He said that in recent years, procuratorial organs have actively promoted the reform of the judicial responsibility system, strengthened supervision over the operation of judicial power, and promoted the establishment of a public interest litigation system and a plea leniency system, so as to continuously meet the people's demand for democracy, rule of law, fairness, justice and other aspects at a higher level. He hoped that the law enforcement and judicial organs of the two places would further strengthen exchanges and cooperation and make new contributions to safeguarding national security and social stability and serving the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Zhang Juneng thanked Tong Jianming for the meeting and expressed his willingness to make efforts to safeguard the Basic Law and strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the Hong Kong courts and the procuratorial organs of the mainland, so as to better protect the legitimate rights and interests of the people of the two places and ensure the stability and long-term development of "one country, two systems".
