On quiet summer nights, we can often see many fireflies flying around, like twinkling little stars. In the insect world, there are very few insects that can emit light, and this small thing is famous for its ability to emit light. The ancient Greeks called this little bug "bright tail", which is really a very graphic name. Now, scientists have given it a nice name, fireflies.

When the male fireflies mature, they will grow wing caps. The female fireflies are not very noticeable, and they do not feel the joy of flying at all, and they know nothing about the vast sky. It remains a larval for the rest of its life, as if its body is never fully developed, which is really pitiful!

Fireflies like to eat snails the most, the first choice is those who are relatively small, it rarely eats large snails, it may be more laborious. Before eating the snail, the firefly first anesthetics the snail, and when the snail is unconscious, it is powerless to resist, and then it destroys the snail. It's like giving a sick person an anesthetic before surgery, and when the snail loses consciousness, it won't feel pain and struggle.

A small snail, probably out of curiosity, began to crawl slowly toward the grass, its tentacles sticking out and dangling left and right, feeling excited. At this time, a firefly noticed the snail, because the snail has a strong attraction to it. It shook its fists, drew out the weapons it had carried with it, and prepared to attack. This weapon is too small to be seen with the naked eye. I just happened to have a magnifying glass next to me, and I immediately came in handy it. Under the magnifying glass, I saw two jaws growing on the firefly, both curved, and if they were combined, they would become a hook. The hook was sharp and small, like a hair. If you put the hook under the microscope, you can see that there is a groove on the hook. Honestly, this hook is nothing special, but it is very useful for fireflies, a deadly weapon used to anesthetize snails and enjoy delicious food.

Seeing that the little snail had probed its body out of its shell, the firefly felt that his opportunity had come, so he stabbed the snail with his large jaw. The fireflies move very softly and with a gentle attitude, as if they are not facing a prey, but a close friend, and the action is very similar to kissing. The fireflies stabbed, and the venom flowed down the small groove on the hook into the snail's body. The firefly stopped to see how the snail reacted, and then stabbed it again, and five or six times, the little snail's tentacles gradually softened and lay there motionless. I thought, the snail must have been unconscious from being anesthetized.

However, there is always a sparseness in The Hundred Secrets, as long as the snail accidentally leaves a small gap, it creates an opportunity for the fireflies. Fireflies will mercilessly stab hooks into the snail's flesh and release venom. At this time, the fireflies must move gently, otherwise, if the snail is suddenly disturbed, it will fall from the grass stalk or stone, and there is a chance to escape.

The organ used by female fireflies to emit light grows in the three sections behind the body, and the light under each of the first two segments is emitted underneath, forming a broadband shape. The luminous part of the third section is much smaller, with only two small dots, and the light can be shot out from behind, and this light can be seen from above and below the fireflies. The light emanating from the broadband and small dots is a little bluish, but it is very bright, and in the dark of night, it can shine far away.

It's like giving a sick person an anesthetic before surgery, and when the snail loses consciousness, it won't feel pain and struggle.
In the sweltering heat of summer, many small snails gather on the hay or straw beside the road and lie idly there motionless. There are also snails that gather at the edge of the cool, damp gutter, which is cooler here. At this time, of course, the fireflies will not miss such a good opportunity to come here to catch their prey.
In order to carefully observe how fireflies anesthetic snails, I deliberately did an interesting experiment. One day, I found a large glass bottle, put some grass in it, and then put in a few snails that were not big or small, and then Caught a few fireflies and put them in. All the preparations were made, and I sat patiently next to it, waiting to see what would happen inside.
As we all know, snails have a shell to protect themselves, but when they crawl or burrow out of the shell and look around, they are easily attacked by fireflies. These little snails are also very clever, and they will often climb to the high places that sway, such as the top of the straw, or stay on very smooth stones, and these places will be like a lid to cover the exit of their houses so that they will be safe.
Now you see, the fireflies treat snails gently not out of kindness, but for the sake of 100% success in hunting, this carnivore is not so kind!
"Fireflies, hanging lanterns, flying west to east, like a little star." This is a nursery rhyme that has been circulating for a long time. You can imagine that because of this little lantern, the fireflies can see the way forward in the dark night, and it is also famous for this and is well known to many people.
The male firefly's luminous organs are not as many as the female fireflies, only the two small dots behind the body, which are all owned by the entire firefly family, which is not unusual at all. When the fireflies were still small grubs, they already had these two small dots, and later as the body grew, these two small dots gradually became larger. Whether from above or below, we can see these two glowing dots. In this way, female fireflies are much brighter than male fireflies because they have two more glowing bands.

This little insect looks cute on the outside, but if you think it's a vegetarian, you're wrong, it likes to eat meat the most, and it has its own unique tricks! It remains a larval for the rest of its life, as if its body is never fully developed, which is really pitiful!
This little insect looks cute on the outside, but if you think it's a vegetarian, you're wrong, it likes to eat meat the most, and it has its own unique tricks!
Under the microscope, there is a white coating on the skin of the fireflies, forming a fine granular substance, which is the birthplace of light. Light is produced in the respiratory organs of fireflies. The reaction that mixes with air to emit light or burn is called oxidation. Fireflies can emit light, which is the result of oxidation, and those things that resemble white paint are the residue after oxidation.
Fireflies can control their luminous brightness very accurately, if it wants to make its own light a little brighter, it will increase the amount of air inflow in the thin tubes in the body, if it is not happy, it will reduce the amount of air inflow in the thin tubes in the body, and the light will darken. If the fireflies are angry, they simply close the valve and stop pumping air into it, and the little lamp will go out. On a summer night, when the mischievous children wanted to catch them, they obviously saw them flying in circles around them, tired of flying, but when they walked lightly to the front, they could not find them. They thought it was their own eyes that had been spent, and that the fireflies might have flown away. In fact, they heard the sound, turned off their own small lights, and lied to them! Isn't this little guy very cunning!
When they are subjected to some external stimuli, the two small dots behind the firefly's body are affected, but the two glowing bands of the female firefly are not disturbed in any way and shine as usual. I have tried many times to keep the light bands of fireflies from glowing, and although the methods of making noise, pouring cool water on them, blowing smoke from their pipes, and pinching their small bodies with their hands have not had a big impact on their glowing bands. After a brief adjustment, they returned to their usual form.
The light emitted by the fireflies is white, looks soft, and does not irritate the human eye at all. Seeing this light in the dark night is like many white, beautiful little flowers sprinkled from the moon, which makes people feel very warm.
But you must not think that this little bug that will glow is a very indifferent guy, they have no feelings for the family members, even if they have no sense of responsibility for their eggs, let them fend for themselves. When they want to lay eggs, they will not choose a safe and suitable place for the baby's life, but will choose a random place to lay their eggs there, which may be on the ground, it may be on the grass blades, or it may be in a small ditch. After laying their eggs, they flap their wings and fly away. As for the baby's life and death, it all depends on their luck, and the mother firefly will not look at them again anyway.

This little insect looks cute on the outside, but if you think it's a vegetarian, you're wrong, it likes to eat meat the most, and it has its own unique tricks!
Fireflies are always glowing from birth to death. Even the eggs glow, and the larvae glow. When the cold winter comes, the larvae burrow into the ground, but not deeply. Even if they burrow into the ground, this lamp is still on because it is a lamp of hope!

Fireflies are always glowing from birth to death. Even the eggs glow, and the larvae glow. When the cold winter comes, the larvae burrow into the ground, but not deeply. Even if they burrow into the ground, this lamp is still on because it is a lamp of hope!

Excerpt from Insects
This little insect looks cute on the outside, but if you think it's a vegetarian, you're wrong, it likes to eat meat the most, and it has its own unique tricks!
