Vascular hemophilia is a serious disease that affects the ability of dogs to have blood and clotting. However, most of the diseased dogs' daily performance is very normal, if it is not a blood draw, surgery or injury, the owner does not know that their dog has a blood clotting problem.
Vascular hemophilia is a blood disorder that affects the ability of blood to clott. Platelets are normal components of the blood, and they are responsible for clotting. Vascular hemophilia in dogs refers to a dog that lacks a specific protein called vascular hemophilia factor, which is necessary for the normal formation of blood clots.
Dogs with vascular hemophilia usually have the following symptoms:
1. Long-term bleeding from the wound or surgical site
2. Spontaneous bleeding
3. Long-term bleeding after childbirth
Dogs with vascular hemophilia may experience uncontrollable or persistent bleeding due to the lack of vascular hemophilia factors. This usually occurs after surgery or when a dog is injured, but it can also occur spontaneously and without cause from various body orifices.
More than 70% of Dobermans have been shown to be carriers of von Willy Brande's disease, but that doesn't mean they're the only breed that will suffer from the disease. In fact, Scottish Terriers and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are more likely to develop the most severe form of von Willybrand disease, with Dobermans, though the most prevalent, generally the mildest.
Vascular hemophilia is divided into three types according to the deficiencies of dogs in terms of vascular hemophilia factor. Type 1 is the mildest form of vascular hemophilia and type 3 is the most severe form. Common dog breeds influenced by various types of von Willy Brand are:
Type 1: Dachshund, Doberman, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Manchester Terrier, Schnauzer, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Poodle, Hilti Shepherd, etc.
Type 2: German shorthair indicator dog.

This is done through the use of special coagulation sponges or hemostatic powders, blood transfusions, and sometimes a medication called a coagulant tablet, which helps dogs produce more vascular hemophilia factors in their blood.
There is currently no cure for von Willy brand's disease. Therefore, the best way to prevent von Willy Brande's disease is to undergo selective breeding, and varieties that are prone to carry vascular pseudohemophilia can be tested before breeding to prevent the disease from passing on to offspring. If you have a dog that is susceptible to or has been diagnosed with vascular hemophilia, you should be cautious about anything that involves blood.
1. Any surgical incision that needs to be made should be as small as possible, and if possible, laser or cauterization should be prioritized to reduce bleeding.
2. For any liquid for injection, blood draw and administration, the size of the needle and catheter should be as small as possible.
3. Keep the dog's nails shorter to reduce the occurrence of them getting stuck or tearing and bleeding by something.
4. Hemostatic powder is often available at home in case of emergencies.
