Coconut heart leaf beetle is a major dangerous alien pest, which once seriously endangered coconut trees planted in a large area of Hainan. After years of research, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences has developed an effective coconut palm leaf nail control technology, which is in the leading position in the world. Recently, experts from the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences took this technology abroad to aid the Maldives.

From March 23 to the end of March, Peng Zhengqiang and Lü Baoqian, experts in the prevention and control of coconut palm leaf nails of the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences, went to the Maldives to investigate the harm of coconut heart leaf nails, demonstrated the release of coconut heart leaf nail parasitic bees, the use of coconut nail clear medicine packs and green zombie bacteria on the spot, and suggested that the government of the country should focus on biological control, adopt the prevention and control strategy of hanging medicine bags from coconut trees on the coastline of the island and releasing natural enemies of parasitic bees inside the island, and carry out publicity and education on the prevention and control of coconut leaf nails to residents and students on the island to improve the awareness of prevention and control of local residents.

Coconut palms are important vegetation plants in the Maldives, accounting for more than 70% of the country's trees. In 1999, when the Maldives introduced coconut tree seedlings from Southeast Asian countries, it led to the invasion of coconut palm leaf beetles, causing great harm to the coconut trees in the country, not only seriously affecting the income of coconut farmers, but also affecting the customs of the Maldives tropical island country and threatening the ecosystem of the Maldives tropical island.

After the Maldivian government learned that the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences successfully blocked the invasion of coconut heart leaf nails in Hainan, in August 2012, it sent agricultural and plant protection officials to the hospital to study and exchange coconut heart leaf nail control technology, and applied to the Chinese government, hoping to sign a coconut heart leaf nail prevention and control technology agreement with China, and China sent experts to help the Maldives build a coconut heart leaf nail natural enemy factory, build a joint research center for coconut pests, and train local control technicians.

At the end of last year, the "China-Maldives Coconut Pest Joint Research Center" foreign aid project was approved, and the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences, as the project undertaker, carried out the prevention and control of coconut palm leaf nails and technical assistance. The project was implemented until October 2015. In the next step, experts from the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences will guide and help the Maldives to solve the problem of breeding and indoor breeding technology of coconut palm leaf beetle, build a coconut heart leaf natural enemy factory and a joint laboratory for coconut pests, train prevention and control technicians, and hope to take the prevention and control of coconut palm leaf nail as the starting point to carry out bilateral multi-faceted international cooperation.
