Scholars at home and abroad gathered to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Tang Guizhang's birth

Modern Express News (reporter Chen Xi) This year marks the 120th anniversary of Mr. Tang Guizhang's birth. Tang Guizhang is known as the "Grandmaster of Cilin" and "the great fighter of the academic circles", and his learning and achievements are obvious to all, especially his "Quan Song Ci", for example, the strength of one person, the accumulation of ten years of merit, but also forever praise Xuelin.

From November 6th to 7th, the "Commemoration of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Mr. Tang Guizhang and the International Symposium on Lexicology" sponsored by the Chinese Rhyme Literature Society and Nanjing Normal University was held at the Suiyuan Campus of Nanjing Normal University. Nearly 100 scholars from dozens of universities and scientific research institutions in the United States, Japan and China participated in the combination of online and offline conferences and seminars. In the affectionate recollection of everyone, the image of a generation of lexicons "dedicated to karma and deep in love" was revived in people's minds.

Tang Guizhang (1901-1990) was a famous Chinese lexicographer, literary historian, educator and lyricist. He graduated from the Department of Chinese of National Southeast University in 1928 and was a professor at the Department of Chinese of Central University and Jinling University. After 1949, he successively served as a professor in the department of Chinese Nanjing University, Northeast Normal University, and Nanjing Normal University. Mr. Tang Guizhang devoted his life to the study of lexicology, and edited "Quan Song Ci", "Quan Jin Yuan Ci", "Word Series", etc., "Lexicology Series", "Tang song ci brief interpretation", "Song Ci Si Kao", "Song Ci Chronicle", etc., standing a towering monument in the field of contemporary lexicology.

Although philosophers are far away, the model lives on. At the opening ceremony on the morning of the 6th, Mo Lifeng, president of the Chinese Song Dynasty Literature Society and professor of the College of Literature of Nanjing University, said in his speech: "The most feasible way for us to improve the style of study now is to return to tradition and emulate the predecessors. Today, there are so many Tang disciples and rookies in the academic circles gathered here to solemnly commemorate Tang Lao and remember Tang Lao with deep affection, the essence of which is to call for the return of tradition, to call for Tang Lao, and the return of the clean and healthy academic atmosphere created by the predecessors who have made moral friends with Tang Lao and the friendship of words. It is in this sense that I would like to say to Donald: The soul is back! ”

"Look around the inner word forest, and there are a few people in the world"

"With the work of one person and one hand, from Bo back to the covenant, hook shen shen micro, complete the "Whole Song Ci", "Word Series" and other more than a dozen magnificent works, look around the Hai Nei Ci Lin, and how many people can there be in the world? After eight years of war of resistance, ten years of catastrophe, national disasters and family sorrows are gathered in one, and the pen is not quitting, the perseverance is amazing, and how many people are in the world? Writings are equal to the body, the sound is growing, and they are willing to praise the virtue of the teacher, reward the future generations, and regard themselves as often insufficient, which is rare among scholars in the world. Mr. Wang Jisi, an old classmate of Tang Guizhang, can be described as pertinent to Mr. Tang's "coffin conclusion".

"Looking around at the Inner Word Forest, how many people can there be in the world?" In the eyes of the younger scholar Mo Lifeng, "even if it is said that there is only one person in the world, it is not too much." ”

"Compiling a collection of literature of a generation is too big to accomplish." Mo Lifeng said that when the Qing Kangxi Dynasty compiled the Quan Tang Poems, there was already a good foundation for Hu Zhenheng's "Tang Yin Tongzhi" and Ji Zhenyi's "Tang Poems", but it was still officially mobilized more than a dozen scholars, which took a year and a half to complete. Although the total number of works of Song Ci is only two-fifths of that of Tang poetry, Tang Lao compiled the "Quan Song Ci" with the strength of one person, and then compiled it into the "Series of Words and Phrases" and "Quanjin Yuanzi", and its difficulty can be imagined. "Elder Tang has been subjected to turmoil many times in his life, he can be called a man of the east, west, south, and north, and his body is very thin, and he can resolutely complete the compilation of several big books without financial support and teamwork, and this great wisdom and courage are completely derived from the love of traditional culture and the sense of responsibility for the national cultural undertakings of the country.

Mo Lifeng's mentor Cheng Qianfan and Tang Guizhang were under the songwriting master Wu Meimen, so Mo Lifeng performed a disciple ceremony to Tang Guizhang. Tang Guizhang, as the founding ancestor of modern Song Ci research and the founder of Song Dynasty literature research, his academic achievements are jiahui Xuelin, a generation of irrigation, needless to say, but what makes Mo Lifeng more admired is the virtue behind Mr. Tang's academic achievements.

"Mr. Tang was young and lost, and entered the Yin family at the age of 24, and he had a deep love affair with his wife Yin Xiaozeng. Unfortunately, Lady Yin died of illness 12 years later, leaving three young daughters. Before her death, Lady Yin told him: He will marry again one day, and he must not treat his three daughters badly. Mr. Tang replied: If you don't marry again, won't you be treated badly? At this time, Mr. Tang was 36 years old, but he promised a thousand dollars, and he was single for 54 years until he died at the age of 90. In Mo Lifeng's view, Mr. Tang's move is not only rare in this world, but also difficult to find in ancient times. In the history of Chinese literature, the mourning poems of Yuan Shu, Wei Yingwu and Li Shangyin and the eulogies of Su Shi have touched countless descendants, but most of them lived alone and remarried shortly after, and their deep affection has become a myth in the history of literature, and Mr. Tang's love for his wife and the depth of his love can really be described as the sea of dead stones and the life and death.

According to Tang Guizhang's daughter Tang Didi, after her mother's death, her father often went to the cemetery alone for a whole day, reading and playing pipes with his deceased wife. The will left by the mother, the father remembered for life, single-handedly raised the three daughters to adulthood, in the old age, the eldest daughter, the second daughter died successively, the elderly and infirm Mr. Tang took on the burden of taking care of several young grandchildren.

"Originally, it is not a loss of morality for a widowed person to remarry, and it is normal for a man to be widowed and have a child who needs to be raised to continue the string. Donald's actions were not the result of external moral demands, but a natural outpouring of his deep affection for his wife and children, the observance of a solemn promise with his life. Mencius said: Benevolence and righteousness are rooted in the heart. In my opinion, the affectionate and gentle temperament is the internal condition for Donald to become the grandmaster of the lexicography generation. Mo Lifeng said.

Every word and deed is a model of teacher morality

At the opening ceremony on the morning of the 6th, Professor Chen Guoxiang, president of Nanjing Normal University, delivered a welcome speech. He reviewed Mr. Tang Guizhang's more than 70 years of lexical research and great achievements, summed up his lofty spirit of dedication to scholarship, the feelings of educating people in the spring wind and rain, and sincerely wished Tang Men disciples to inherit the torch and forge ahead. Professor Xiao Ruifeng, President of the Chinese Rhyme Literature Association, Professor Tian An, Head of the Department of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, Professor Cai Yi of Nanshan University in Japan, and Shi Shuangyuan, a senior education expert in Australia, delivered speeches via video link. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Gao Feng, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts of Nanjing Normal University.

As a generation of famous teachers, Tang Guizhang has been teaching and educating people all his life, successively serving as a professor at Central University, Jinling University, Nanjing University, Northeast Normal University, South Normal University and other schools, peach and plum all over the world, and now Tang Men disciples have accounted for half of the contemporary lexicology research community. Mr. Tang also subtly cultivated and led the disciples with his own moral standards, and the Disciples of Tang Men all had a deep understanding of this.

"After working in colleges and universities for many years, after witnessing many strange situations in today's academic circles, and then thinking back on Master Tang's personality and governance, I feel that the high character of others and the integrity of the study style are rare in the world." Yang Haiming, a professor at Soochow University, recalled that in the 1960s, Mr. Wang Zhongwen, the second son of Wang Guowei, had no livelihood, and Tang Shi invited him to participate in the completion of the "Quan Song Ci", but when it was published, Mr. Wang could not sign his name because of his "rightist" status, Tang Shi was very sorry and fought for him, and the documents and archives of the Zhonghua Bookstore preserved the publication contract of the "Quan Song Ci" of that year, and in the column signed by the editor, there were five words of "Wang Zhongwen Order supplement" written by Tang Lao himself with a brush. After Mr. Wang Zhongwen restored his reputation, the signature of the "Whole Song Ci" has since been "compiled by Tang Guizhang and edited by Wang Zhongwen".

"What I feel most deeply is that Master Tang is very persistent in his pursuit of life and career, and he is unswerving in his dedication to scholarship and love." Wang Zhaopeng, professor at the South Central University for Nationalities and president of the Chinese Lexicology Research Association, said that Tang Shi's name has shocked people at home and abroad, and there are countless people who come to ask for advice or write letters to ask for benefits. For example, in the 1970s, when Mr. Yu Beishan wrote the "Luyou Annals", He asked Tang Shi for help, and Tang Shi replied with four long letters, or instructed rare information, or discussed relevant views. Another example is that in the early 1980s, Liu Qingyun asked Tang Shi for advice on words and phrases, when the revised edition of the "Dictionary of Words and Phrases" had not yet been published, but Tang Lao first transcribed the 25 kinds of bibliographies that would be added, and many examples were passed down as good stories in the academic circles.

"Mr. Tang's academic legacy is a valuable asset shared around the world"

Through the inheritance and development of a generation of scholars such as Tang Guizhang, Xia Chengtao, and Long Yusheng, lexicology has finally become a "xianxue" comparable to poetics from a "small way", and has blossomed overseas.

Cai Yi, a professor at Nanshan University in Japan, told a little-known "poetic edge" in the international sinology community. In 1988, Cai Yi obtained the qualification to study at Kyoto University in Japan, and the instructor was Mr. Shigeru Shimizu, a master of sinology, in order to present a weighty meeting gift to the teacher, Cai Yi wanted to ask Tang Lao Mo Bao for help, so he asked Tang Lao's granddaughter-in-law Wang Xijiu to help, and Tang Lao gladly agreed, wrote a self-made que word with a pen, and gave a copy of "Mengtong Words". Mr. Shimizu was overjoyed, and after reading the "Dream Tong Words", he also wrote a japanese poem to give to Donald. "None of Mr. Shimizu's descendants have inherited his father's business, and if I have the opportunity, I hope to return this letter to Shimizu's family and give it to Nanshi University." Cai Yi said.

Professor Tian An, head of the Department of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, traced his own path of lexical research. As an American scholar who studied Tang and Song dynasty literature, Tian An's academic experience was similar to that of Chinese scholars, and he deeply benefited from the influence of Tang Guizhang's knowledge. At the end of the 1980s, as a young author, she read for the first time the works of Mr. Tang Guizhang and Professor Yang Haiming, a disciple of Tang Men, and was deeply inspired by the "what kind of words can be called words?" Who coined these words? How do we determine their identity? Which of the words is more important? What was the main form of words in the early days? Who figures influenced the formation of early lexical traditions... Behind these questions lies Mr. Tang's keen insight. ”

Tian An believes that "Mr. Tang Guizhang's academic legacy is a precious wealth shared by the whole world, and his academic descendants are still difficult to reach, and at present, with the rapid development of scholarship, it seems very necessary for us to stop here to remember the giants of this discipline in the last century and review the enlightenment they left behind." At the same time, Tian An hoped that the young scholars attending the meeting would study new interdisciplinary academic issues on the basis of the outstanding achievements of the previous scholars, examine the literature of the Song Dynasty with a broader academic vision, and explore the new relationship between the Song Dynasty and the social, cultural and economic history of the Song Dynasty.

The opening ceremony also held the release ceremony of "Tang Men Lexicology - Commemorative Anthology of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Mr. Tang Guizhang". The book comprehensively shows the fruitful results of the lexicography research of Tang men disciples, among which the "Tang Men Xue Genealogy" system combs the academic inheritance of several generations of Tang Men scholars, and it is understood that the compilation of academic genealogy is still the first in the national academic community.
