At the scene of the event, Tao Qiping, president of the Nanjing Chess Sports Association, presented an honorary certificate to Song Shuming, praising his outstanding achievements in the development of this wisdom sport, promoting the spirit of sports, and realizing the dream of a sports power in the cause of coaching and popularizing the art of chess for 40 years.

A blind chess match that transformed him from a worker to a coach

Although Song Shuming loved chess when he was young, he was not from a science class, and in 1977, a chess match between Nanjing and Ma'anshan put him on the road of chess coaching.

During the Spring Festival in 1977, at the Workers' Cultural Palace in Ma'anshan City. Nanjing's Song Shuming played one-on-two blind chess against two champions of the Ma'anshan Light and Heavy Industry Bureau. At that time, although Song Shuming won the individual runner-up of the Nanjing Chess Tournament and was the main team champion of the two provincial championships, he was still an employee of Nanjing Electroacoustic Equipment Factory and not a professional chess player.

In the day's match, two large chessboards the size of movie screens were erected side by side in the open square. In front of the chessboard, more than 500 chess fans watched the game, and the scene was spectacular. Playing blind chess relies on the basic skills of chess players. Players must sit facing the audience, do not look at the chessboard, and the layout of the chess is all about the memories of the people. Two blind chess games started at the same time, and Song Shuming held the backhand. After 80 minutes of battle between the two sides, Song Shuming threw two opponents to the ground and sang triumphant songs.

The game completely conquered the local chess fans, who said: "You can win without looking at the chessboard, oh god!" "There is admiration in helplessness. Song Shuming's wonderful performance also conquered Ye Kuanxin, the leader of the Nanjing team who was watching the game on the spot, and he was the director of the Personnel Department of the Nanjing Municipal Sports Committee at the time, and he immediately recommended Song Shuming to the Nanjing Municipal Sports Committee as a chess coach at the Nanjing Zhongshan East Road Junior Sports School just after the Spring Festival. Because the ninth Jiangsu Provincial Games will be held the following year, the chess project is looking for coaches to prepare for the Provincial Games.

In this way, Song Shuming walked from the factory to the municipal sports school and became a full-time chess coach.

40 years of coaching career, fruitful

Among Song Shuming's first batch of students were Li Jinzhong, Wang Xiaping, Dai Rong, Liang Ping, Tan Yueqing, etc., all of whom were boys and girls who were particularly obsessed with playing chess and were selected from district and county primary schools. Coach Song comes from the grassroots level and has an innate set of skills for teaching children to play chess. He adopted the method of "going out, please come in", so that the small chess players could play more games with adults in factories and mining enterprises while playing scores, and participate in actual combat. He will also invite Cheng Chunhua, a chess master in the city, and adult famous players Lu Peng, Gao Chongwen, Zhou Genlin, Zhang Dafu, Chen Miaosheng, Zhuo Jiazhang, Hu Wenbo, Shao Guiyou and others to play chess with the students.

In 1978, the 9th Jiangsu Provincial Games was held. Coach Song's student Li Jinzhong and female chess player Wang Xiaping followed Li Guoxun and other famous players to represent the Nanjing team and won the team championship. This is the first time that the disciples trained by Coach Song have won the championship trophy. Coach Song was awarded the second class merit by the Nanjing Municipal Sports Commission and awarded a certificate.
