In March of the seventeenth year of Chongzhen (1644), Zhang Xianzhong, the leader of the peasant revolt, led his troops to capture Hengzhou (present-day Hengyang) in Huguang (present-day Hunan) and marched toward northern Guangdong. At the behest of the imperial court, Li Xiang united with the officers and soldiers of the four provinces to suppress the rebel army, zhang Xianzhong was forced to move to Sichuan, and the officers and soldiers recaptured the four counties of Lanshan, Jiahe, Xintian, and Linwu under Huguangheng Prefecture. The imperial court rewarded him for meritorious deeds and added an official title of former governor Tongzhi to him. After that, Li Xiang made more efforts to fight for the Southern Ming Emperor and led his troops to sweep away the "rogue thieves" in the Shanhai area. He was promoted to the position of General Jia Gongbao of the Governor of Dingguo and was responsible for managing the military affairs of Chu Yue. In his later years he died at home.
