The Plain of the Pantanal in the upper reaches of the Paraguay River in Brazil. Wetlands, forests, and grasslands intertwine to form nature's natural palette. It is home to one of the largest freshwater ecosystems in the world. In Brazil, there are plans to dig a giant shipping canal that runs across the Pantanal. The economic purpose of the project is to allow Brazil's soybeans and natural gas to be shipped around the world by ocean-going ships. Downstream in Pantanal, dredgers are already busy working. Hydrologists say that if they continue to do so, half of the world's largest wetlands will dry up.
A nursery at the root of the mangrove forest. In the Missool Marine Reserve in Indonesia, a shooting fish swims past the roots of an American mangrove tree covered with soft polyps. From corals to saltwater crocodiles, mangroves are home to and breeding grounds for many marine species, and also provide an economic source for humans living near shore. In the forests of Madagascar, lemurs are vital seed propagators. They feed on the fruit and then spread the tree species through feces. Coral reefs are the first significant ecosystem on the planet to be widely harmed by climate change. At current temperature trends, most reefs will be dying by 2050. The warm surface waters from el niño events have led to severe coral bleaching, and the image below shows dead and dying corals in the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef. Zooxanthellae parasitize the corals, giving color to transparent polyps, which also pay "rent" to provide the polyps with the nutrients they need to build their bones. However, after the warming of the world's ocean waters, when the heating reaches 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, it will exceed the limit of coral tolerance, and the algae that are colored by corals will be "expelled" and coral bleaching will follow.
