Horton said that regardless of the outcome, the world needs an account. From his personal standpoint, he wants sports to be cleaner. Horton also said that his previous attitude was not aimed at any country or individual, and he has never changed in this regard. In the interview, Horton did not mention Sun Yang's name.

Horton has repeatedly protested Sun Yang in public, calling him a "liar who takes medicine." On August 7, 2016, Horton won the gold medal in the men's 400m freestyle with a time of 3:41.55. On July 21, 2019, Sun Yang won the championship with a time of 3:42.44, and Horton ranked second. After the game, Horton once again expressed his protest against Sun Yang by refusing to accept the award.
