Committed to unifying the sociality of the landscape and the sociality of the humanities.
Environment, create architectural aesthetics
Su Nan Xuhui: Teacher Li Baozhang, hello! We understand that your design concept often mentions sociality, how does the sociality of the living environment behave in your opinion?
Li Baozhang: The sociality and functionality we want to express can be seen by the public with the landing of the project, and it is also changing. What we have to do is not just "look", but put ourselves in the shoes of empathy, to put ourselves in that environment.
It is difficult for us to return to the environment in which we used to live, but some habits of living and the state of living have been maintained. For example, the sense of privacy, everyone needs their own space. We need to control this environment, in this environment, we can quiet down, find ourselves, re-recognize ourselves, think about ourselves, this is the spatial environment we want to create.
We want to really see the eternity of an architecture, and what we have to do is that after three or five years, or even ten years later, we will feel beautiful architecture, which is the art I pursue.

Su Nan Xuhui: Since returning to China in 1999, you have been engaged in landscape design for so many years, and you have achieved a lot of results and have been generally recognized by the industry. So can you share what you think a good landscape design should look like?
Li Baozhang: When society is in the classical stage, it is from a person's attitude; in modern society, it is from a rational attitude. For Chinese, we often say "good," but I don't think there's a more ambiguous word than "good." What I think of as "good" is perfection, and we can't get rid of the good and talk about beauty.
Almost all landscape design is based on three aspects: social, functional and spiritual. Functionality, although it is the basis of the landscape, but the landscape with functional power, is often meticulous and impersonal. If we start from sociality, then what we do is social, and we can empathize with this region and this city.
Landscape architects carry not only design, but also care for people and society, especially vulnerable groups.
Su Nan Xuhui: As a design group covering 13 cities, what is the unique shining point of the new Chinese style it represents?
Li Baozhang: The new Chinese style is the study of historical inheritance, from the history of Chinese gardens, it is the most fundamental understanding of the way of life and way of thinking of Chinese, and it is designed according to the way of thinking of Chinese. The "new" of the new Chinese style is based on life, and culture can push this style forward.
The new Chinese style pioneered by Aoya focuses on "new", that is, to take modern life and expound it in a Chinese way. What we have to do is to let Chinese see the vision in their hearts in this era. The essence of most people's hearts is that every time we say goodbye, we hope for new changes, because people are always pursuing better things, and we want people to see this landscape, and their hearts will burst with amazement and even emotion.
Su Nan Xuhui: We know that you have studied and worked abroad before, and you must have been exposed to many types of design styles. So how do you see the borrowing and differences between different styles and cultures?
Li Baozhang: For a long time, many residential planning, community construction and landscape construction have been misunderstood: we think we can live other people's lives. In fact, we can't because we have our own living culture and way of life. When other people's culture and living conditions are better than ours, what we should do is to learn from other people's lifestyles and graft them onto our own culture.
And it's bleak to blindly borrow from other people's styles, as if we have no emotions, and this desolation is like being displaced on our own doorstep. When we pile up the culture of others and the attitudes of others into our own land, we become strangers in our own land, which is a kind of alienation.
Only when we return to our environment can we get a sense of solidity. Because this environment is built for our activities and aesthetics. So when we learn from others, we must start from our own hearts and emotions and make trade-offs according to our own reasoning.
Landscape, the pursuit of humanistic resonance
Su Nan Xuhui: How do you think about the sociality of modern landscapes, and what role will social landscapes play in harmonious human settlements?
Li Baozhang: Landscape is an important part of harmonious human settlement. Humanities is the fundamental reason for the rise of the landscape, the landscape allows people to return to nature, people enjoy comfort in nature, but also in nature to get communication, and even in nature to get thinking, this is not the embodiment of landscape sociality?
In today's high-pressure environment, it is unimaginable without a good public environment. Only when cities and landscapes coexist and merge into one, will they bring huge social and economic benefits. Landscape and humanities are mutually successful.

Su Nan Xuhui: We know that you are not only a good designer, but also a travel writer. After traveling around the world, how do you define and experience space?
Li Baozhang: The designer should be a cultural scholar and social scholar. We must have the awareness and ability to have insight into life, and we can never stop moving forward. For example, many people are now thinking about the question, what is the quality of life? I believe that for many people, the quality of life is not that I read a book today, but that you hold a book and leisurely drink a cup of coffee for an afternoon. This kind of life is what Pingjiang Road can let us see.
Sunan Xuhui: You cooperated with Xuhui in the Boyue Tianning project, what do you think is the cultural fulcrum of the Boyue Tianning landscape?
Li Baozhang: If we return to the scope of Chinese culture, when it comes to the feeling of Chinese going home, it is actually a process, and the end of this process is to go home, is to be fixed. So what we do is to make the whole process of the occupants go home to feel at ease, which is where the culture of the living landscape lies.
When people live together, they form a tribe, so cultural life has a fixed community scope. When you see the layout of our space, these beautiful gardens that you see are actually a beautiful place for different people and different emotions. It is not only designed for beauty, it is also designed for the habits of occupants. We call it cultural design.
We have returned culture to China, culture to Jiangnan, and Changzhou. First of all, the plants of the project should have the charm of Jiangnan, and the aesthetics should have the elegance of Jiangnan, and these unifications are the cultural fulcrum we have made for this project. The so-called cultural landscape is: it begins with life and ends with poetry.
Su Nan Xuhui: In the process of your landscape design, do you think that our Platinum Yue products, its inheritance and transcendence are reflected in what places?
Li Baozhang: In the past two decades, China has gone through three stages from the beginning to the wonderful. The first stage is to consider whether the functionality of our dwelling is sufficient; in the second stage we begin to consider social and cultural nature; and in the third stage, our transcendence is the cohesion of our aesthetic, spiritual and social forces. Our progress is to make the aesthetics of the project more express the essence of the city under the premise of the social and cultural nature of the city itself.
In addition, our designs should also keep pace with the times, whether it is a sense of simplicity or design. The main point of design is to put people first and conform to the development of the times. We never wanted to replace the past, we just created a new era for a newer group of people. Therefore, the inheritance and transcendence of the Platinum Yue system have two meanings, one is to ascend, and the other is to evolve.
The ideal society of co-creation systems
Su Nan Xuhui: In the process of cooperating with Xuhui, how do you evaluate the design of Xuhui?
Li Baozhang: Pleasant cooperation can be reflected in a wonderful work, we have the same values as Xuhui, and the pursuit of the height of the work is the same. Xuhui people have always had the pursuit of beauty and a sense of responsibility for society, which resonates with our values. I often say: Although Zhou is an old state, its life is renewed. Xuhui is "the sun rises in the east, emitting brilliance", our mission is to restore the new; we are in line with the culture and style. Xuhui has performed very well and we should thank each other.
When we do real estate, we have to return to society itself, because everyone is in this society, and we have to have this consensus. We want to keep fulfilling this promise, and now and Xuhui have cashed out two very good projects, and I hope to be able to continue to be wonderful.
Su Nan Xuhui: Every designer, and even everyone, will have an ideal society in their hearts. As a designer, how do you realize the ideal society in your heart?
Li Baozhang: By now, we have almost brought The Chinese culture to the end. Returning to Datong society, the main problem is livability, the so-called livability, that is, social and functional at the same time. Building livable communities and weaving humanistic poetic lives is the way to open multi-level green communities in patterned cities. At the beginning of the design, we had to consider everything on foot for 30 minutes around the neighborhood, because this is the circle of life of 95% of the occupants here.
The yard we have created for the ideal society is a yard suitable for the entire community circle. If the community is at the water's edge, then we want the occupants to have water, not only to have a water feature, but also to have the peace of mind of having water.
The ideal society is a system of man and nature, which not only has aesthetic functions, but also social indoctrination.

Su Nan Xuhui: As a master who has made great achievements in the field of landscape architecture, you must have some gains and insights in the course of these years, can you share them with us?
Li Baozhang: Landscape design is a science about nature and society, every mountain in the world, every side of the water, we can harvest something from it. The great beauty of nature can cultivate their own sentiments and cultivate their own vision and beauty.
Sincerity is the code of conduct for landscape architects. For the younger generations, I hope that they can participate more in society, observe society, draw wisdom from their interactions with the public, always face life with a positive attitude, and become promoters of social change.
The future development of the landscape industry must be guided by the integration of people and the environment, paying attention to the living environment and all-round quality development, which must be a complete combination of humanities, economy, landscape, architecture, planning, and industry.
