Yellow-billed chestnut woodpecker (scientific name: blythipicus pyrrhotis). Body length 30 cm. The identification is characterized by body feathers reddish brown with dark spots , and a long, pale yellow mouth. It is distinguished from bamboo woodpeckers in that the body feathers have black transverse spots. The male has crimson patches on the sides of the neck and pillow. It is distinguished from the chestnut woodpecker in that the transverse spots are thicker and the beak is pale yellow. The Back and Hips of The Hainanese species do not have black transverse spots. The iris is reddish brown; the mouth is pale greenish yellow; the feet are brownish black.
It is generally rare and inhabits evergreen forests at altitudes of 500-2200 meters. The nominate subspecies are resident birds in the subtropical regions of Yunnan and southeastern Tibet, the Hainanese species are found only in Hainan, and the South China Asian species are found in South China and southeast. It is found in India and southeast Asia in various regions and countries. China is found in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, and Hainan.
Listed in the International Red Book of Birds of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 2009 ver 3.1. It was included in the "List of Terrestrial Wild Animals Protected by the State or of Important Economic and Scientific Research Value" issued by the State Forestry Administration of China on August 1, 2000.
