Since the director killed two main characters in the first part, the Hong Kong film Eavesdropping 2 begins with a different story, but retains the same main actors and uses the same surveillance technology.
A car accident revealed that a successful stockbroker, Luo Minsheng, was being tracked by a military surveillance device. He Zhiqiang, the leader of the anti-terrorism unit, was called to investigate. He discovers that Luo belongs to a secret stockbroker organization called the "Landlords' Club", and that sima Nianzu, the son of the late leader, is eavesdropping on almost every member of the club, trying to find the current murderous leader and avenge his father.
But the storyline of "Secret Surveillance" is only an appetizer, while the main dish is the director's realistic understanding and presentation of human nature. Unlike the classic "good guy vs bad guy" cliché, the film shows diverse personalities from an objective point of view, such as an indifferent bystander. Not only are the so-called "bad guys" devoured by greed, but ordinary people are also susceptible to greed.
A complete and effective legal system may be the last guarantee against the dark side of humanity. Even the life-gambling tycoons have always been terrified of the ICAC and willing to stop whistleblowers at all costs. Lone Avengers won't single-handedly deal with an entire host club like a Hollywood movie. Instead, he leads the police to find the culprits and seek justice.
The plot is tight and the development is smooth. In fact, it went so smoothly that the entire film was rushed from start to finish, not giving the audience enough time to digest the story. Nor did the film give the three lead actors a balanced chance to show off their outstanding acting skills. Fortunately, the three lead actors Liu Qingyun, Gu Tianle and Wu Yanzu will get another chance when the director includes them in the next sequel.
Popular conspiracies weaken the financial factor. Some financial terms do blurt out of the actors' mouths, and stock manipulation does form part of the backstory, but that's where all the fuss about finance comes in and where the plot begins. The director expressed his intention to abandon the financial elements of the next sequel.
