Guangzhou, 18 Dec (China News Network) -- According to a report by the Guangdong Zhongshan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau on 18 December, when the staff of the bureau inspected a batch of logs (iron beans) imported from Guyana on the shore of Zhongshan Port, they found that there were obvious worm holes in the logs, and after prying open, they found small beetle adults. After laboratory identification and expert review, it was determined that the insect was a rubber beetle, which was intercepted for the first time at Zhongshan Port. The bureau has carried out quarantine treatment of the entire batch of logs in a timely manner.

Rubber beetles are listed in China's "List of Quarantine Pests entering the country" and are widely harmful forest pests. Adults are 2.0–2.7 mm long and are difficult to see with the naked eye. The insect is mainly distributed in the eastern United States and most of the world's tropical and subtropical regions. At present, there is no record of the distribution of rubber beetles in China.

Rubber beetles mainly harm woody plants by drilling moths, lurking in the bark or wood center for life, and the damaged parts show needle cone borers and yellow-brown wood powder. In severe cases, the stem is covered with borer holes and powder columns and powder, so that the trees die. The insect has strong fecundity and can spread over long distances with logs, wooden packaging, etc. There are currently no effective prevention and control measures.

Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, is an important base for the wood products furniture industry, with an annual export volume of more than 500 million US dollars, Zhongshan Port is also one of the important ports for importing logs in South China, with an annual import of nearly 100,000 cubic meters of logs and timber, and a number of precious wood species, the source covers the world's major forest production areas, and the epidemic prevention situation is grim. Zhongshan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau strengthens port quarantine inspection and laboratory testing capacity building, and has completed 69 CNAS (China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment) certification, which fully covers major categories of plant quarantine such as cordyceps molluscs, providing technical support for maintaining the security of the national gate of Zhongshan Port. Since the beginning of this year, the Bureau has intercepted 848 batches of pests from incoming logs and timber. (End)
