At about 19:00 on December 12, Li Zhengyang learned from a friend that a large injured bird had flown from a villager in Qinyang City, and without saying a word, he immediately drove to Qinyang. At the villager's house, he recognized the injured bird as the brown-tailed eagle, a national second-class protected animal, a species of eagle. So he took the brown-tailed eagle home and placed it in a simple cage he had built.

After preliminary examination, Li Zhengyang found that the brown-tailed bird was very thin, listless, and one of its wings was hunched over, with trauma. After the inspection, it was the early morning of the next day, and Li Zhengyang began to prepare food and medicine for the brown-tailed eagle. Because of the need to mix medicines in the food, in order to facilitate the eating of the brown-tailed eagle, Li Zhengyang crushed the rabbit meat into minced meat, and then fed the brown-tailed goose into a gastric tube.

On the morning of December 13, Li Zhengyang found that there was excrement in the cage, and the brown-tailed eagle had a lot of spirits and its wings could be folded. From this, he judged that the brown-tailed eagle may have been pulled on the wings by external forces, but did not hurt the bones.
