Hong Kong Customs cracked the largest diamond smuggling case on record

Hong Kong, June 4 (Xinhua) -- According to the Hong Kong Customs on the 4th, the Customs seized a batch of suspected smuggled jewelry on the 3rd, with an estimated market value of about 25 million Hong Kong dollars. Based on the market value of the diamonds seized in the case, this is the largest case of diamond smuggling cracked by customs on record.

Hong Kong Customs said that customs officers intercepted an outbound light truck at the Sha Tau Kok control station on the 3rd, found the suspected smuggling jewelry in two backpacks, and arrested the 47-year-old male driver. The jewelry seized by customs included about 1,300 diamonds, 10 sapphires, 1 jadeite and about 30 grams of broken diamonds, with an estimated market value of about HK$25 million.

Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department pointed out that the relevant case is still under investigation. Customs will continue to crack down on cross-border smuggling through risk assessment and intelligence analysis.

Under the laws of Hong Kong, any person who imports or exports goods without manifests is liable to a maximum fine of HK$2 million and imprisonment for 7 years upon conviction, and up to HK$1 million and imprisonment for 2 years for illegal importation, possession, sale or purchase of taxable goods.
