Ballon d'Or: Stoichkov lost to Van in 1992. Basten

In the long history of the Golden Globe Awards, there will never be a lack of controversy and regret. At the beginning of the 1992 Golden Globe Awards, the Bulgarian Stoichkov won the most, but the result of the selection was that the Dutchman Van. Basten won the Ballon d'Or for the third time. Missing the Golden Ball in this year's selection still haunts Stoichkov to this day.

In 1992, Stoichkov, as the core scorer of La Liga Barcelona, won the La Liga championship with the efforts of his teammates such as Laudrup, Ronald Coman and Guardiola; and in the final of the European Champions Cup that year (not yet called the Champions League, the three major European cups - the Champions Cup, the Cup winners' Cup, and the Confederation Cup), with a free kick from teammate Ronald Koman, he killed Sampdoria in Serie A and won the first European Championship Cup in Barca's history. The Bulgarians were instrumental in winning the title. With two very heavy titles in hand and considerable personal data, the industry was unanimously optimistic that the Bulgarians would win the European Ballon d'Or.

In contrast, Van. Basten, as the core of serie A supremacy ac Milan, was banned from the european competition due to the punishment of ac Milan, and could only fight in serie A, so Basten only won one Serie A championship in the end. But Van Basten scored 25 goals in the Serie A, known as the "Little World Cup", and won the Serie A Golden Boot. He also led Milan to remain unbeaten throughout the season 91-92, eventually setting a record of 58 unbeaten games.

That year was the year of the European Championships, Van Basten did not perform well in the competition, not only did not score a goal, but also in the semi-final with Denmark, he missed a penalty, resulting in the Dutch team being eliminated from the final. In the end, the Danes staged a new Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and miraculously won the championship.

At that European Championship, the Bulgarians did not qualify for the final round, Van Basten did not perform well, and the stars of other traditional strong teams did not perform well. Therefore, the 1992 Golden Globe Awards refer more to the club's achievements and performance.

Stoichkov and Van Basten, who have la Liga and the Champions League, have fought fiercely for the top spot, which is also in a sense a contest between ac Milan and Barcelona. But it was the Dutch who laughed at the end, the Serie A champion defeated the La Liga champion + The Champions League.

In this vote, there were 11 judges who considered Basten to be the number one in Europe, just one more than the one who supported the Bulgarians. Stoichkov was also unlucky, and the judges' good points objectively dispersed the votes: 3 people voted first for Hasler, and two people voted first for Schmeichel. In addition, Brian Laudrup, Bergkamp and Koeman each received one vote. As The European champion, Denmark has a total of seven players in the top 22 this year.

Final Ranking:

  1. Basten (Netherlands, ac Milan) 98 points

  2. Stoichkov (Barcelona, Bulgaria) 80 points

  3. Bergkamp (Ajax, Netherlands) 53 points
