Earthworms in the rain

Wednesday, June 9, 2021 Rain

Compared to my hometown Enshi, beijing rain seems to be particularly small, these days the college entrance examination God is still powerful, this afternoon came a rainstorm, it is we sent our daughter to the test center, we hold the umbrella, listen to the sound of heavy raindrops crackling on the umbrella, see a soybean-sized raindrops floating in front of us, after a while there are many small streams on the ground, walking in the rain, it feels like returning to home.

Earthworms in the rain

When we arrived at the South Long River Park near the test center, we found that it was still a long time before the test, so we walked around the park, and we walked back and forth in a cloister, just to avoid the rain and cold. Suddenly I saw an earthworm crawling crookedly on the cement floor, and I quickly asked my daughter to look at it, and she took a look, startled by this incomparably large and ugly earthworm, and quickly ran away. This earthworm is about 15 centimeters long, almost as thick as a little thumb, this is the first time I have seen such a large earthworm in my age, afraid that it will be trampled to death by pedestrians, and quickly ask my husband to kick it into the pond on the side of the road.

The earthworms were in the pond, and it didn't take long to climb from the pond to the dryer soil under the eaves and start digging holes. At this time, the daughter was very curious, ran over to see the earthworms digging holes, and asked her father: Why do earthworms that originally like to stay in the soil crawl out on rainy days?

Her father told her daughter: the skin of earthworms has a breathing function, there are many gaps in the soil, usually there is water adsorbed around the soil, the gaps are filled with air, after the heavy rain, the gaps in the soil are filled with water, the air is expelled to cause the amount of dissolved oxygen in the soil to decrease, so the earthworms will have difficulty breathing, and they will come out of the hole. And after the earthworm is soaked in water, it must flee immediately, if it can't go away, the body will be edematous.

In addition, on rainy days, earthworms will move on the ground, because earthworms are afraid of bright light. After the earthworm climbs out of the ground, its skin is completely exposed to the air, blown by the wind, the skin dries out, and respiratory failure dies. If it is summer, the rain is clear, the sun is more fierce, and some earthworms die because they are too late to climb back to the cave.

The daughter said: No wonder this earthworm hurried to find the drier soil under the eaves to make holes and find a new home for himself, this guy looks gray and not slippery, but is actually very smart.

Earthworms in the rain

Earthworms live in the dark dirt all year round, afraid of the light, afraid of the sun and blue light, and they spend their ordinary and obscure lives in the dark soil. Earthworms generally prefer to live in moist, loose and organic soil, especially in fertile gardens, vegetable gardens, arable land, ditches, rivers, ponds, channels, and near the canteen near the sewer side, garbage dumps, water tanks and so on.

Earthworms prefer quiet environments and do not like noisy environments. Earthworms are more afraid of pesticides, and it is difficult to find the presence of earthworms in places where pesticides are excessive. That is to say, the environment in this park is quite good, which is quite suitable for the survival of earthworms. However, on a rainy day, it is difficult to climb out of the soil, but at any time it is faced with giant feet that have been stepped on, so that they will not survive under a single blow.

The daughter watched the earthworm hole little by little, watching its long body slowly shorten, and she suddenly shouted: "Mother, do you see that the tail of this earthworm is much lighter than the color of other parts of the body?" Why? "I told her: We all know that there are many amazing creatures in the world, such as earthworms and lizards, geckos have the same regenerative ability, but earthworms have stronger regeneration ability, as long as you don't hurt its head, it will become two earthworms." Earthworms will naturally lighten the color of a new tail.

Earthworms in the rain

The earthworm was called the most valuable animal on earth by the biologist Darwin, who said: "The plough is one of the earliest and best inventions of mankind, but long before human survival, the soil has been cultivated by earthworms, and it will continue to be cultivated." The movement and excretion of earthworms are very beneficial to improving the quality of the soil, which can keep the soil breathable and the soil healthy, which plays an important role in agriculture.

Because earthworms are rich in protein, they can be used as feed for livestock, poultry and aquaculture to increase production. Earthworm also occupies a certain position in pharmacology, is a common Chinese herbal medicine, it is called dilong in traditional Chinese medicine, "Materia Medica" called it has the effect of meridian activation, blood circulation and stasis, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Earthworms can secrete a special enzyme that can break down proteins, fats and woody fibers, so leaves, straw, livestock and poultry manure, domestic garbage, activated sludge and papermaking, food industry scraps, etc., can be its food materials. Earthworms can eliminate environmental pollution to a certain extent. Therefore, many countries have established earthworm farming plants and called earthworm farming plants "environmental purification devices".

Earthworms do a lot of things, and its best quality, in my opinion, is that it's constantly burrowing holes and loosening the soil. Earthworms feed on rotting organisms in the soil, eating and swallowing large amounts of soil, sand, and tiny stone chips. The process of earthworms "digging up the soil" is actually the process of eating - excreting.

A healthy earthworm can turn over 20 to 40 tons of soil per year, loosen the soil, increase soil organic matter and improve the structure, and can also promote acidic or alkaline soil to become neutral soil, increase phosphorus and other fast-acting components, so that the soil is suitable for crop growth.

In this vast world, almost all animals are fighting for their own interests and seizing their own territory, so who is it that loosens the earth without complaint or regret? Who quietly turned barren land into fertile soil? Who is obsessed with life and fighting for survival? It is an earthworm, an earthworm that can be seen everywhere and no one appreciates or cares!

The life of earthworms is ordinary, ugly, not admired and praised, but they are selfless and do not seek fame and fortune. Earthworms silently turn the soil underground and make the land loose and fattened through their own excrement, so that the harvest of crops is better, and the crops grow faster, which is a good helper for human beings. Even if you leave the mortal world, you still have to use your body to moisturize the crops and do your last part. No matter how much people discriminate against the earthworm and do not care about its life or death, the earthworm always lives tenaciously, and relentlessly turns a barren land into fertile soil with virtue. When it is divided into sections, the earthworm does not die in one fell swoop, but transforms itself into several lives in the struggle...
