Since the ancient Shu ancestors migrated from the upper reaches of the Min Mountains to the Sichuan Plain, the people here have always looked up to the snowy mountains that are close at hand and far away in the sky for 5,000 years, and they continue to record the history of Guanshan on bronze, ceramics, splendid embroidery and picture scrolls, and also inject spiritual value into the snowy mountains through the creation of these civilizations.

With the rediscovery of the geography of the western region and the vigorous improvement of modern transportation in modern times, people can not only view the mountains in the plains, but also go deep into the snowy hinterland that the ancients never reached. The beautiful natural landforms, rich cultural resources and thick historical accumulation of the western plateau have attracted the attention of literary artists from all over the world, and the painters have dreamed of the strange landscape and mysterious colors of the western plateau.

However, how to paint snow mountains is a problem that the ancients did not solve, looking at the snow landscape patterns of Chinese paintings in previous dynasties, there are Wang Wei, Zhao Songxue, Huang Gongwang, Shen Zhou, etc. taken from jiangnan landscapes, there are Jing Hao, Guan Tong and other good at painting the snow scenes in the Central Plains Taihang Mountains, there are Fan Kuan and others with the Qinling Mountains as the theme of the snow landscape, but rarely see snow scenes created with the theme of the snow mountains of the western plateau.

Here the mountain peak and the cloud are exactly the opposite of the black-and-white relationship of traditional painting, and the grand and straight mountain shape seems to be inconsistent with the structural aesthetic of traditional painting. Faced with new problems, a group of artists with the theme of snow-capped mountains spontaneously began to study and explore, and a new school of painting gradually formed in this process. The artists of the Snow Mountain School used the expansion of the traditional painting language to tell the sense of reverence for the majestic mountains and rivers, and expressed their gratitude for the snowy plateau that nourished the meadow lakes and rivers and land.
