Zanzibar and Pemba

After World War II, Zanzibar also gained autonomy in 1963 and declared its independence in December of the same year as a constitutional monarchy ruled by the Sultan. By the following year, the people of Zanzibar had overthrown the rule of the Sultan and established the People's Republic of Zanzibar. On 26 April 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar formed the United Republic, which was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania. Although the two countries merged into one country, there were still many problems between the two sides, and in recent years Zanzibar has tended to become independent from the United Republic.

When Tanganyika and Zanzibar first merged, the hope was to integrate the economic interests of both sides, but over time, the economy did not improve much, and then with the rise of the Islamic Revival Movement, Zanzibar has made demands for independence in recent years. Currently, the Tanzanian government gives Zanzibar a great deal of autonomy, which has an autonomous government, a parliament and even its own president, and Zanzibar has its own national football team.
