Rules of the game

Rules of the game

In the movie "Cold War", the policeman played by Mr. Leung Ka Fai has a wonderful line in the INDEPENDENTCAC to teach two young officials who are not deeply involved in the world. The main content of the line is: I have served the Hong Kong Police Force for 30 years, I know many people, and I have offended many people. But in these 30 years, one thing I have learned is that every agency, every department, every position has its own rules of the game. Whether it is light or dark, the first step is to learn it, but many people have died before they have reached this step, do you know why? opinionated. The second step is to find the thread in this game, learn how not to foul, and know how to play inside the ball, so that you can barely keep alive.

More than a decade ago, there was a best-selling book " Circle Trap " . I roughly glanced at the book and didn't finish it. The general content is to tell the experience of a business person working hard in the workplace, thus revealing a lot of insider information in the workplace. Commercial warfare is a battlefield without smoke of gunfire, but it is bloodier than the actual battlefield; although there is no real death, it is more painful than death.

Most of us survive in the workplace, and when we are in a circle for a long time, we will find that there are many intricate networks in this circle, crisscrossing, light or dark, complicated and complicated. And each of us, like a node in this network, is connected to various lines up and down, left and right. The people who can stay on this "node" are grinded by time, and the larger the node, the closer it is to the center of the circle, like a spider's web. The connecting lines between each of us are thick and thin, more or less.

Many people disdain such a combination of dots and lines, thinking that they can smoothly climb into the "center of the circle" by relying on their own skills, just like the worldly masters in martial arts novels who have special skills, they can break into the dragon pond and travel the world alone. As everyone knows, the final outcome of these masters is not a few who start and end well. Modern society is not like a martial arts novel, but a real cruel reality, relying on individual single-handed jianghu masters can no longer be alone. What's more, many people are not yet masters, just ordinary "good people". Unless you are like Ling Huchong and Tao Yuanming, quit this jianghu, find a pure land of paradise and live a pure, inactive, and comfortable life. However, as I said in the Laughing Pride Jianghu, where there are people, there are rivers and lakes, can you escape?

The light and dark of what is said in that line can be roughly understood as the expertise of a certain industry and the rules of the game of a certain industry.

Many of us say that society is impetuous, so according to this logic, there are too few people who "practice internal skills" in a down-to-earth manner. What we call practicing internal skills is actually business knowledge, professional skills and so on. In the more than 20 years of work I have experienced, learning business knowledge has become less and less. Maybe it has entered the Internet era, no need for business knowledge, everything depends on "search". Take the book industry, even if the people in the circle, the phenomenon of reading books is declining, they are holding their own products, where they are sold in a hawdering style. Other people's good works are ignored and heard, and the idea of the queen mother selling melons is particularly serious.

Let's talk about the dark one. We all face invisible market pressures, much of which stem from the rules of the game in this industry. Why is it called the rules of the game, that is, it cannot be put into the rules and regulations, unwritten rules. These unspoken rules, most of the time no one tells you, are honed by yourself, by time, by experience, little by little. Every industry is like an independent jianghu, and each jianghu has its own rules of the game.

Many years ago, when I was working at Gome, Gome carried out a "reservoir project". The main content of this project is to recruit a lot of recent college students and elite talents with overseas experience (commonly known as returnees) to supplement the lack of knowledge structure in various management positions of Gome Electric Appliances. Thanks to the love of the headquarters, I was assigned 17 college students who had just graduated, which is considered to be Dai Pei, who came to our store for internship, and I became the person in charge of these 17 people.

The 17 young men didn't last long, asking a lot of questions, very few suggestions or solutions to the problems. At that time, I felt that there were very few people who could stay. Once on the way home, taking the bus, I met several college students talking about Gome electrical appliances, and at first glance, they were also members of the "reservoir project". The indifference and scorn of Gome Electrical Appliances seems to have cleanly and thoroughly studied the operation and management of Gome Electrical Appliances.

The enthusiasm and ability of young people to think independently is commendable, but for an industry, a business, without a few years, you can't really understand the mystery. I can't use big words to belittle the frivolity of young people, but it is difficult to survive in an enterprise with such unobstructed remarks, to borrow the words of Mr. Leung Ka Fai above, which is self-righteous.

More than ten years ago, on the eighth floor of the Third Pole Bookstore, there was a multi-purpose hall that could accommodate three or four hundred people. In addition to some business activities, professors from various universities will give lectures every weekend. Sometimes, when I'm busy, I sit in a corner and listen. Once, hundreds of graduating students at Peking University gave speeches there, roughly on topics like ideals. Many students have high academic qualifications and speak boldly and generously. Most of them work with the goal of being executives at large corporations. Hearing this, I can't help but think of the 17 young people at Gome. Just imagine, Gome Electrical Appliances at that time each store annual sales are more than hundreds of millions, each store is an independent accounting unit, each store has hundreds of people, if you let you manage such a company, the livelihood of hundreds of people is not guaranteed at all. Rights do not represent competence. Young people, the operation and management of a business is too simple.

After being in the book industry for so long, there are fewer and fewer words. Except for a few friends, there is very little talk about books because the book industry has so much to learn. So the longer the time goes on, the more you feel like walking on thin ice and being careful. But seeing that many people are enthusiastically breaking into this circle, they can't help but worry about them. I have told many people in this circle that if you want to mix in this circle, you must first learn to read, and if you can't even do this, then you can't communicate with the big guys in this circle. The big guys in this industry have been in this circle for many years, and they have grown up little by little. Some people seem to be lazy and full of brothers and brothers, but these people were once "former elites" who were full of poetry and books, but they were tempered by time, and those angular personalities were smoothed out (some people were deliberately hidden).

Once worked as a book purchasing director of a company, someone asked me, is there any trick to book procurement? I thought about it for half a day and said, no. If there is a "bubble" out, it has been "bubbled" in the book pile for a long time. Some books I have not read, some new books I have seen for the first time, but how to judge the market value of a book, that is also after the "bubble", with the nature of gambling "intuition".

Everyone wants to become an elite, everyone wants to become a "big guy" in the industry, to borrow a line from the movie "Shaolin Temple": without eating vegetarian for three days, I want to go to the Western Heavens, where there is such a cheap thing.

Pragmatism, prudence in words, and prudence in deeds are the most basic mentality of mixing up the rivers and lakes.
