In Green County, Georgia, last February, Abery, an African-American man, was shot dead by three white men while jogging. The three were arrested and prosecuted more than two months after the case occurred, and were subsequently charged with hate crimes, attempted kidnapping, etc. On November 5, local time, the case was heard.
It is understood that the defendants believed at the time that Abery was linked to the local theft. Prosecutors said the three defendants took the life of a young man through just one hypothesis.
Prosecutor Linda Dunikowski: Everything the three defendants in this case did was based on assumptions, not on facts, not on evidence, and they made assumption-based decisions that took the life of a young man.
Abery's mother, Jones, attended the trial that day. Prosecutors played a video of Abery being shot during the trial, the first time Jones had seen a video of his son's murder in its entirety. CNN reported that Jones was crying at the scene.
The jurors were almost all whites suspected of deliberate discrimination
Abery's mother, Jones, said in an interview with the media last month that she believed Abury had been targeted because of her African-American status. In addition, the jury list of the recent case has also aroused concern. Only one of the 12 jurors was of African descent, and the others were all white. According to NBC, the judge in charge of the case in Georgia recently admitted that the composition of the jury was suspected of intentional discrimination.
