There are no more than 1,500 gibbons in China, and the degree of endangerment exceeds that of giant pandas. Recently, Guangzhou Zoo held a "Gibbon Day" theme event, hoping to arouse public attention to the survival and protection of gibbons. At the same time, Guangzhou's first successful breeding of white-cheeked gibbon "baby" has broken the marriageable year, and Guangzhou Zoo is currently looking for a target for it nationwide.
With the impact of human activities and climate change, the primary forest has been very seriously damaged, and the existing gibbons in China only live in the primary forests of Yunnan, Guangxi and Hainan, with a total of no more than 1500, of which four species are listed as critically endangered by the iUCN Red List. Arguably, gibbons are more endangered than giant pandas. Guangzhou Zoo is the leader of the population management group of the captive northern white-cheeked gibbon and the yellow-cheeked gibbon, which has carried out the population management of the gibbon for a long time and has established a perfect population lineage, so that the seed source allocation of captivity is more effective and accurate. On October 26, researchers from Guangzhou Zoo walked into Wuliangshan National Nature Reserve and jointly established the "Wildlife Rescue and Research Base" with the Jingdong Management and Conservation Bureau of Zhongshan University. Initiate the conservation of the western black-crowned gibbon and its associated species in the wild, and promote exchanges and cooperation between ex situ conservation and in situ conservation.
At the same time, on October 27, Guangzhou Zoo held the "Gibbon Day" theme activity, and a group of children became the first batch of gibbon protection messengers. They expressed their love for gibbons by painting and handcrafting gibbons. The zoo also holds a science popularization class in the science popularization promenade, so that visitors can understand the conservation process of the Eastern Black-crowned Gibbon. The zoo said that in order to facilitate the public to learn more about gibbons, it will also carry out long-term science popularization activities on gibbon themes such as "Primate Survey", "Playing Guangzhou Zoo", and mobile phone knowledge game in the park.
According to researchers from Guangzhou Zoo, there are currently 9 gibbons in the park, including 5 white-cheeked gibbons (4 males and 1 female) and 4 white-browed gibbons (2 males and 2 females). The zoo has been breeding gibbons since the 1970s, and the white-cheeked gibbon "baby" is the first gibbon bred in Guangzhou Zoo. In April 2005, after three years of falling in love, Bao Dad and Bao Mom finally "opened their branches and leaves" and gave birth to a male small white-cheeked gibbon, named "Baby". This marks the first successful breeding of the white-cheeked gibbon, a national first-class protected animal, in Guangzhou. Today, the white-cheeked gibbon "baby" of Yushu Linfeng has already reached the marriageable year, and guangzhou zoo is currently working hard to find a partner for it for the whole country.
