BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- On August 4, the US Department of Defense's Bureau of Security Cooperation announced approval of a plan to sell about $750 million worth of weapons to Taiwan. In this regard, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, pointed out in response to an inquiry on the 5th that we resolutely oppose US arms sales to the Taiwan region.
We urge the US side to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three Sino-US joint communiques, especially the "August 17" communique, stop all arms sales to Taiwan, refrain from sending wrong signals to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, refrain from endangering peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and refrain from harming the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait. The DPP authorities' attempts to "rely on the United States for independence" and "resist reunification by force" will only push the Taiwan people into disaster.
