Like a cat like a ferret and like a tanuki, the natural enemy of King Julian in Madagascar, the Horse Islander

author:Wenchen Zoo
I don't know if you have seen the animated movie "Madagascar", which has a particularly silly character - King Julian the Ring-tailed Lemur.

There is a scene in the movie where the ring-tailed lemurs are driving a large bombardment in the forest clearing, and when they are happy, the danger suddenly comes, and the lemurs shout "fossa!" fossa! Scattered and fled, several cat-like animals appeared on the high slope behind them and began to capture the fleeing lemurs.

Later, these animals, which did not look very intelligent, were scared away by the protagonist Alex (the lion), which was handsome for no more than three seconds.

These animals, called fossa, were translated by the subtitle group as "long-tailed tanuki."

In fact, this translation is not wrong, because their more widely circulated name is the Long-tailed Tanuki Cat of The Falklands. But this is not their only name, this animal is also called the Madao Tanuki, Madagascar Long-tailed Tanuki, The Falkland Badger, the Falkland Anteater, the Falkland Cryptoanal Beaver and so on.

However, due to its official name in the Chinese cites appendix, it is called the Horse Island Badger in this article.

As the name suggests, the cryptoprocta ferox lives on the island of Madagascar and is endemic there.

Because the Falklands look a lot like ferrets, badgers, cats, and civets, as well as somewhat like small and medium-sized canines (such as serval dogs), they have been taxonomically controversial and are currently divided into carnivorous, anteaters, and the genus Fascioliae (Cryptoanic analis). So when I said earlier that the name of the Chinese of the Horse Island Badger is messy, it is also for this reason.

Although the Horse Island badger has a badger in its name, it is not a species of the badger family, which is actually quite common, such as the rat woman is not a woman, the green turtle is not a turtle genus, the turtle is not Wang Ba, and there is no wife in the wife cake...

Back to the point. Through the photo of the front Horse Island badger, you can also see that it really resembles a feline, which is also known as the small cougar (small cougar) abroad.

In particular, the Horse Island Badger has a broad snout, rounded ears, a muscular body and a long tail, except that the legs are a bit short, and it really looks like a big cat in appearance.

Below is a Horse Island badger lying on the ground yawning, and from this point of view, it still looks like a cat. However, the appearance of the Falklands is similar to that of medium- and large-sized cats, and is the result of convergent evolution at almost the same ecological niche.

Although the Horse Island badger is currently in the family Anteaters, it does not eat ants much, but prefers to eat meat in large bites.

Madagascar is also a relatively isolated island, with few large predators native to it (except for large dogs brought by humans), and the Falklands badger is the largest carnivorous animal on madagascar.

The Falklands have a wide range of food, in all kinds of food, all kinds of lemurs account for more than 50%, the rest of the small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, caught insects will also eat, do not waste food.

In the movie "Madagascar", the lemurs who are holding a party are frightened by several Horse Island badgers, which is more realistic (except for the lemurs), because the Horse Island badger is the natural enemy of the lemurs.

Lemurs are very good at climbing trees and can escape predators on the ground, but the Horse Island badger can also climb trees and can jump from one tree to another, which is quite flexible.

The Falklands spend most of their time alone, but during breeding they sometimes hunt in small groups, with one Majir slurry catching up with the lemurs and driving them off the trees, while the rest of the Majima badgers rush up to besiege them.

The habitat of the Horse Island Badger changes with the density of food, and if the food is almost eaten, the Horse Island Badger will move its territory to another place.

The Falklands do not exterminate all prey in their territory, and their presence has a profound impact on the surrounding ecological environment and the population of many native animals, and is a very important and key species on the island of Madagascar.

If the territory of the Falklands coincides with the human settlements, they will also try to hunt livestock and poultry in human villages, and even goats and calves may be stolen and eaten by the Falklands.

Although the Falklands have no natural predators in their native areas, they, like many wild animals, are not able to withstand the expansion of human activities and malicious hunting.

Between 1987 and 2008 alone, the population of wild Horse howe deer declined by about 30 percent. The Falklands are currently defined as "vulnerable (vu)" species by the IUCN IUCN and are also included in Appendix II of the Washington Convention cites.

Although China does not produce Horse Island badger, as long as it is found that someone breeds Horse Island Badger in China, it is regarded as illegal trade and breeding of national second-level protected animals for filing and sentencing.
