According to the South American Overseas Chinese News Network, the "2014 Brazilian Endangered Species" survey report released by the Brazilian National Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on the 5th shows that in 2014, a total of 3299 species of animals and plants in the country were endangered, which is equivalent to about 20% of the total number of species assessed.
Brazil's national news agency reported that a total of 49,168 species of plants and 117096 animals have been identified in Brazil. The survey assessed and analysed the conservation status of 4,617 plants and 12,262 animals listed by the Chico Mendes Biodiversity Conservation Institute (ICMBio) and the National Plant Conservation Center of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro (CNC Flora).
Of the species analyzed, 0.06% are extinct, 0.01% are wild, 4.73% are critically endangered, 9.35% are endangered, 5.74% are vulnerable, 3.98% are almost endangered, 62.82% are non-threatened, and 13.33% are not well data available for effective analysis. Vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species are all considered threatened.
Surveys show that the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) is the biome with the most threatened species, with the survival of 1989 species of flora and fauna threatened, accounting for about 25% of the total number of local species. It is followed by the Cerrado prairie, with a total of 1061 threatened species, accounting for about 19.7% of the total number of species in this biome. Then there are the Caatinga biome and the Pampas community, with threatened species accounting for 18.2% (366 species) and 14.5% (194 species) of the total, respectively.
The Pantanal and Amazônia forests had the highest proportion of non-threatened species, at 88.7% and 84.3%, respectively, while threatened species accounted for the lowest proportions, at 3.8% and 4.7%, respectively. In terms of numbers, there are 54 threatened species in Pantanal, compared to 278 in the Amazon.
The report shows that at least 10 species in Brazil's ecosystem have gone extinct in 2014, including the Eskimo sandpiper, the Martens tree hunting finch, the Nord's leaf picker, the Pampas meadow wren, the turquoise macaw, the Bernampoco partridge, the spiny-knee leaf frog, the Vespucci rat, the slender-toothed shark and the narrow-billed catshark. In addition, in 2014 there is another animal that has become wild extinct, that is, it relies solely on human captivity to reproduce, that is, the razor-billed pheasant. (Original title: Vigilance!)
