Romania tried to remain neutral during World War II, and the expected neutrality between the power blocs in Germany and the Soviet Union could last until 1940. The Soviet Union issued an ultimatum to Romania, Romania had to evacuate Bessarabia and bukovina in the north, King Carol II had no choice, Romania also lost transylvania in the north to Hungary and South Dobruga to Bulgaria, so Greater Romania shrank to two-thirds of the region.
After Carol II lost all support, General Antoniscu took over the government, supported by the Iron Guards. He is seeking a pro-German course in the hope of returning lost territory. It involved the Holocaust in Bucharest, where thousands of Romanian soldiers participated in the Soviet invasion of the Germans, but in 1944 Romania had to surrender, King Mihae deposed Antonescu and the Red Army marched into Bucharest.
Romania is now fighting Germany in the Allies. While this led to the Germans allied with Hungary having to return to Transylvania, Romania lost Bessarabia and Bukovina in the north. After 1945, Romanians received hammers and sickles, and in 1947, the Romanian People's Republic was proclaimed.
Romania is becoming increasingly dependent on the economy. Raw materials and agricultural products entered the SOVIET Union, in return Romania provided third-rate Soviet consumer goods, also in the field of culture, the Soviets had a great influence, and Russian was introduced as a foreign language in schools. He pursued national independence and became a Hope for Romanians, and initially, rightly so, Ceausescu openly opposed the invasion of Soviet troops in Prague in 1968 and opened his country to the West.
