Place names are valuable cultural resources, carrying people's nostalgic memories and nostalgia for excellent traditions. A place name is a fragment of history; a place name is a picture of style.
The "Traces of Jinshan Mountain Names" organized and compiled by the Jinshan District Planning Affairs and Geographical Names Management Center is from the perspective of place names, which tells the customs, vicissitudes and cultural accumulation contained in Jinshan mountain names. Let's follow this book on a journey through the history and culture of place names and explore the past and present lives of Jinshan's names!
An ancient mountain that became a land 100 million years ago: Cha Shan
Cha Shan, also known as Shade Mountain, is located in the northeast of Jinshan Wei Town. With a circumference of 1000 meters and an elevation of 21.6 meters, it is oval in shape, with a maximum distance of 270 meters from north to south and a maximum distance of 160 meters from east to west. Although the hill is inconspicuous, it was formed in the late Jurassic period of the Mesozoic Era about 137 million years ago, due to volcanic eruptions and magmatic activity, and is very old.
The long geological life of Chashan is also accompanied by rich cultural heritage. In 1973, local migrant workers sorted out land for the garrison on the southeast slope of Chashan Mountain, found a stone well from one meter underground, and then accidentally found a stone axe in the blasting of rocks, and the migrant workers sent these objects to the Shanghai Museum. To this end, the Municipal Museum organized a special person to go to the east side of Chashan Mountain to investigate and excavate, and two cultural sites were excavated here.
The first pit is a slope pit in the southeast of the mountain, in which two soil layers have unearthed relics from the Western Zhou and Shang Dynasties, as well as accumulation layers of the Arimajiabang culture type (4750 BC to 3700 BC). The second pit is located in the cultivated field under the slope, four soil layers, and the remains of modern bricks and tiles and Tang and Song ceramics, relics from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Tang and Song Dynasties, relics from the Spring and Autumn Warring States Period, and remnants of the Maqiao type (Shang Dynasty) of the early printed pottery culture were found in turn. A total of 20 cultural relics from various periods have been unearthed in Chashan Mountain, among which items such as Tao Dingzu, Xiaofang Handle, and Niu Nose are of particular concern. In 1977, the Shanghai Municipal Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Relics made this place a place for the protection of ancient cultural sites in Shanghai and erected a monument for protection.
Cha Shan and some excavated relics
Regarding the origin of the name of Chashan, there are such legends in local folklore. In that year, Qin Shi Huang once climbed Qinwang Mountain near ChaShan mountain to see the sea. However, when looking up, the line of sight was obscured by the trees on Cha Mountain. Therefore, under the order of the First Emperor, all the grass and trees on the Cha Mountain were cut down, and only the red soil and stones were exposed. The hill was named "Shade Mountain". Another Fang Zhi records that the Tang Dynasty Daoist monk Zha Yucheng once practiced Dan on this mountain, and later obtained the Dao Yu into immortals, so the mountain was named Cha Shan, also known as Xian Shan, and the ancient Xian Shan Township of Huating County was named after this.
Even if the grass and trees were cut down by the First Emperor, from the Yuan to the Qing Dynasty, the literati of the past generations traveled south, and they would also climb this mountain to enjoy the scenery and poetry. In the Ming Dynasty, there were "Ten Scenic Spots of Chashan Mountain": two peaks connecting the sea, double apricot Lingxiao, Xiangchi Yinshui, Danjing Milk Spring, Monk's House Stone Wall, Xiandong Tianquan, Jungle Arrow Stone, Absolute Stream Dragon Rock, North Mountain Cuiping, and South Slope Knee Print.
In the 1970s, the garrison and villagers dredged the mountains and rivers, covering the bald mountains with soil and planting trees. Today's Chashan Mountain, with its lush trees and beautiful mountains and rivers, is one of the scenic spots in Huainan.
