Nigel Cook: I paint more trusting intuition and don't have to worry too much about their meaning
Nigel Cook has been described by British critics as the leading figure in British painting of the "post-Doig" generation. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Royal College of Art in 1997 and received his Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Goldsmiths College in London in 2004. His creations involve art history, philosophy, politics and many other humanistic propositions, often using complex, obscure and extremely tense techniques to construct stage-like surreal scenes to show the living conditions and psychological feelings of contemporary urban life.
He said: "For me, painting is still constantly refreshing its difficulty because I am always looking for something unknown. I think if I knew what I was doing, it wasn't art. Painting, therefore, for me is exploring deeper thoughts that may not be immediately understood, nor are they necessarily related to the concept of existing consciousness. In the early days of my painting career, I cared a lot about whether my ideas were expressed thoroughly, but now I trusted my intuition more and was guided by the things around me that attracted me, rather than worrying too much about their meaning. Painting for a long time has taught me a way of observing and thinking, and my trust in this natural intuition tends to lead to the most satisfactory results. So I thoroughly enjoy the initial stages of a painting, groping in looseness and freedom, letting the picture take shape in the initial instinctive decisions. But there are always elements that are true to the facts, such as atmosphere, color wheel, structure or character characteristics, which will continue to influence the choices in the painting process.
