0219 Deliberate Practice: How to Become a Master – Doug Lemow (2)

Chapter 2: How to Practice Deliberately

1. Study successful people and copy them correctly:

Analyze the winners through data analysis. Identify what the winners have in common.

Study and specifically describe common skills so that other practitioners can refer to the learning and accurately replicate them.

2. Decompose the skills and carry out special exercises:

Break down each skill or skill action into steps that allow the practitioner to quickly grasp the mastery.

When teaching a skill, practitioners should be given special exercises until they are fully mastered.

Since no special exercises have been carried out, or the special exercises are not in place, they should immediately return to the original point and re-carry out the special exercises.

3. Name the exercises to reduce communication costs:

Name each skill that delivers our best performance.

Detect the use of these shared vocabularies: Require team members to actively use them as well to ensure that names are used correctly.

4. Simulate the real environment and integrate the skills trained:

After teaching different skills, let the practitioner learn to face the unexpected situations that occur in the official competition or in the actual work through practice.

Set up exercises to help practitioners adapt to local conditions and make the right choice to match them in the right situation.

Simulate real-world environments to ensure that successful off-field practice translates into successful combat performances.

5. Make a high-quality practice plan to effectively promote the exercise:

Keep in mind that the plan must have quantified goals in mind and be prepared to make adjustments.

The plan should be detailed to every minute. Rehearse in advance and adjust plans in a timely manner.

6. Efficient use of time is the golden rule followed by successful people. In the process of performing critical tasks, as soon as you encounter a waste of time, you immediately activate the early warning mechanism and quickly find a solution to the problem. Be creative and fast-moving, and efficiency can change everything.

Chapter 3: How to Make exercises more precise

1. The correct demonstration and explanation of the master will make the practice more powerful:

Demonstrations can help practitioners follow suit, and descriptions can help them understand.

Combining demonstration and description gives practitioners the flexibility to apply the skills they have mastered.

2. Seeing is believing, in order to persevere:

Try to demonstrate in situations that are similar to the actual working environment of the practitioner.

Live demonstrations are often more convincing than instructional videos.

3. Practitioners must remember that accurate and exemplary demonstration is the most reasonable and legitimate way to learn and master skills. Only imitation can make them simply repeat what they see, so that practice can make perfect. Always remember: proficiency is the precursor to creativity.

4. The demonstration should include the results and process to ensure that the practitioner has a clear understanding of how to achieve the ultimate goal. Be sure to demonstrate the important steps that lead to success, help practitioners build confidence, and convince them that if they follow the demonstration practice, they will be able to achieve success.

5. Effective demonstration can expand the effect of the exercise and can guide the novice to quickly achieve success. Constantly demonstrating to practitioners the methods and skills that will allow them to progress can make practitioners progress faster, learn more, and master better.
