Yangzhou bonsai is an important part of Chinese bonsai art. In the long-term development, Yangzhou bonsai has gradually formed a style system of "rigorous and varied, beautiful and spectacular", and together with the Su school, Sichuan school, Lingnan school and Hai school, it is called the "five major schools" of Chinese bonsai art, including tree bonsai, landscape bonsai and water and drought bonsai. In 2008, the Yangpai bonsai technique was included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list; in 2009, the Slender West Lake Scenic Area specially established a Collection, Display, Popularization and Research functions in one of the Yangpai Bonsai Museum, the collection of Yangpai bonsai works from the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the museum is still full of vitality; in 2013, Yangzhou successfully held the International Bonsai Conference. Thomas Elias, president of the International Bonsai Association (BCI), has said that Yangzhou is a paradise for bonsai art and has become an excellent place for people in China and even the world to understand bonsai.
Compared with bonsai art, traditional Chinese painting art has a long history, and Yangzhou is a famous calligraphy and painting town in the history of Chinese painting and calligraphy, and it is a place where famous calligraphers and painters have come from generation to generation, especially the group of eight monster painters in Yangzhou in the Qing Dynasty is well-known and well-known. In Yangzhou, it is not uncommon for calligraphers and painters to directly participate in the creation of bonsai art, such as Zheng Xie, Li Kun, Huang Shen, etc. in the Eight Monsters, who have personally drawn the shape of bonsai, or directly presented bonsai as a painting object in the painting. Today, whether it is bonsai art or painting art, it has a new era style and new aesthetic needs. How to show the charm of Yangpai bonsai art in a more aesthetic, more innovative and deeper form? How to present China's excellent traditional culture to the world in a novel way? These have become the questions that Yangzhou calligraphers and painters and bonsai artists and related people think about together. It is precisely under such thinking and situation that the "Realm of Creation, Chinese Painting and Yangpai Bonsai Art Fusion Works Exhibition" came into being.
Dong Lei, the director of the Slender West Lake Art Center and the famous painter who participated in the planning and creation of this exhibition, believes that art is interconnected, and the bonsai garden has been discovered by the artist, which has a more profound vitality and a deeper cultural connotation.
