【Green Club Observation: New Developments in this Issue】
- Broad-spectrum kale nocturnal moth karyopolytic polyhedral virus began to be used for control;
- The mobile APP "Very Accurate Moth" that can accurately identify the grass moth is online;
- Pilot use of baculovirus biopesticide Fawligen in Africa;
- Require agricultural and rural departments at all levels to strengthen pest monitoring and report on pest conditions on a daily basis;
✦ On July 7, Sichuan Province and the Tibet Autonomous Region held their first joint meeting on joint prevention and control work in Mangkang County, Tibet. (Beijing News)
✦ On July 16th, the National Grassland NightcrawlEr Intelligent Prevention and Control Technology Training Conference was held in Pingdu City, Shandong Province. The training will focus on "intelligent prevention and control" and launch an intelligent prevention and control application platform based on mobile Internet and big data. More than 200 people from all over the country, including agricultural technology extension personnel, experts and scholars and new business entities, attended the meeting. (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs)
——Green Society Editor's Comment: It is very good to use the technology for the control of invasive insects! However, I have not seen any platform recommend this APP in a faster way. Such as: why not directly on a two-dimensional code, so that the majority of readers, farmers can immediately download it? In this regard, the experience of the anti-poaching software "Jianghu Eye" APP is worth learning from the agricultural system. Software alone is not enough, but it is the key to make it easy for the people to use.

✦ On July 17, the Jakarta Post published an article: "Indonesia Prepares for the Grassland Nightcrawler". The article notes that the food and agriculture organization of the United Nations (FAO) discovered the insect in West Sumatra in March, and just four months later, the pest has spread to 12 provinces in parts of Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan. Experts expect the pest to sweep the country in the coming months. FAO is currently monitoring its activities to prevent crop damage and urges all provinces to be aware of this aggressive pest. At the end of July, Indonesia will organize a national workshop with FAO to agree on the most effective actions to deal with the attack.
——Green Society Editor's Comment: The prevention and control of autumn armyworms, Indonesia's response is far inferior to China's! Our country is now a daily report of insects; Indonesia is still dependent on FAO! To borrow a quote from Professor Jorgen Randers, an old friend and author of "2052: China and the World in the Next Forty Years", China's environmental governance is really institutionally advantageous, and the world's first.

On July 18, EKenyan published an article titled "Corn Farmers in the Northern Rift Valley Now Use Soil to Kill Armyworms." Farmers in the North Rift area have invented a new way to use soil to kill insects. The article reads: "Local maize farmers recognize that soil helps suffocate pests and die almost immediately when they are sprinkled on it.

✦ On July 18, the CABI blog posted an article titled "Deploying Biopesticides to Control Grassland Nocturnal Moth (Autumn Armyworm)" in southern Sudan. With nearly 6.2 million people in south Sudan now in need of life-saving food assistance, more than half of the country's population, making it critical to ensure food security. The article describes a new project that has been in place since January to pilot the use of a baculovirus biopesticide called Fawligen. The article shows that it is non-toxic to humans and other non-target species; the fall armyworm does not die immediately after being drugged, and it takes about 2-5 days to die.

✦ On July 19, the Information Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs held a press conference to introduce the agricultural and rural economic situation in the first half of the year. Wei Baigang, director of the Development Planning Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, introduced that the current agricultural and rural economic development is facing a new situation of grassland night moth infestation. (China News Network)

✦ On July 19th, the analysis of the situation and technical exchange of the prevention and control situation of the grassland night moth was held in Wuhan, and experts and scholars from the National Agricultural Technology Extension Center, Chongqing University, the Wuhan Institute of Virology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and several provincial and municipal plant protection stations and the Academy of Agricultural Sciences gathered together to discuss and exchange the prevention and control of this "moth". In particular, it is worth mentioning that this article reports that the broad-spectrum kale nocturnal moth karyotype polyhedral virus can be applied in a large area in the control of the grassland nocturnal moth as an environmentally friendly biopesticide. ✦ On July 22, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences released the latest research by researchers at Penn State University (PSU) in the United States: destroying the intestines of insects is a way for plants to defend themselves by inducing them to develop "leaky bowel syndrome". Charles Mason, a doctor of entomology, said that the combination of physical control and chemical control used by corn plants can break the protective intestinal barrier of fall armyworm, creating opportunities for intestinal microorganisms to invade their body cavity. ✦ On July 23, Qinghai News reported that no grassland moths had been found in the province. The province has formulated the "Qinghai Grassland Nightcrawler Prevention and Control Plan" and the "Qinghai Grassland Nightcrawler Emergency Prevention and Control Plan", established a leading group for prevention and control work, and set up more than 50 monitoring points for the sexual attraction of the grassland nightcrawler, and no invasion of the grassland nightcrawler has been found.
✦ On July 23, Sichuan News Network reported that many parts of Sichuan were invaded by grassland moths, which have spread to 124 counties and municipalities. The worm was first detected in Sichuan Province in early May. As of July 18, it has occurred in 20 cities and prefectures (except Aba Prefecture) and 124 counties (cities, districts) in the province, with an area of 1,000,900 mu. The number of occurrence counties and the area of occurrence rank among the highest in the country. Previously, on June 20, three grassland night moth larvae were found for the first time in the sorghum fields of Hejiang County, which raised concerns about whether the grassland night moth may harm China's sorghum. I have not seen any follow-up reports on this matter.
【What is the grass moth】
The meadow moth, also known as the Autumn Armyworm, the Autumn Armyworm, and the Autumn Marching Worm (Fall Armyworm, scientific name Spodoptera frugiperda) is an invasive pest that feeds on crops and is designated as one of the world's top ten pests by CABI's 2017 State of the World's Plants Report. A 2018 study in Brazil showed that this "moth" plagues as many as 76 families and 353 species of plants. In January this year, invasive autumn armyworm was found for the first time in China's Yunnan Province.
