In 1920, with the help of He Shuheng and others, Xia Minghan came to Changsha and became one of the first students of the Hunan Self-Study University founded by Mao Zedong.

In 1921, through the introduction of Mao Zedong and He Shuheng, Xia Minghan joined the Communist Party of China. In November 1923, Hunan Self-Study University was closed down, and the Xiangjiang Middle School was founded by the Xiang district committee of the Communist Party of China, and Xia Minghan served as a director and mathematics teacher, cultivating a large number of talents for the Chinese revolution.

In December 1924, Xia Minghan was transferred to the Communist Party of China Xiang District Executive Committee, the director of the organization department, the minister of peasants, and the secretary of the Changsha Prefectural Committee.

In October 1927, Xia Minghan led the peasant uprisings in Pingjiang and Liuyang, which effectively cooperated with the creation of the Jinggangshan base area. At the beginning of 1928, Xia Minghan was transferred to Hubei to work and served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. Before leaving, he bid farewell to his wife and his newborn daughter, and gave his wife Zheng Jiajun a red pearl with a poem: "I give red pearls like a gift heart, but I hope that the king's heart is like my heart." On March 18, 1928, Xia Minghan was unfortunately arrested in Wuhan for informing traitors. The enemy tortured Xia Minghan and tried his best to persuade him to surrender, but Xia Minghan always regarded death as a return and would never give in. In prison, he picked up a half-cut pencil with trembling hands and left a farewell letter to his mother, wife, and sister.

On March 20, 1928, Xia Minghan was martyred, and his bones were later buried by Xie Jueya in Parrot Island. The last sentence of Xia Minghan's letter to his wife's family: "Adhere to the revolution and inherit my ambitions, and vow to pass on the truth to the world", which highly embodies Xia Minghan's fearless revolutionary spirit.
