The "Qi Min Zhi Shu" quotes the Han "Guangzhi" as saying: "Chickens have beards, five fingers, golden dumplings, anti-wing seeds, large Shu, small jing, white chickens with golden dice, tingling long, times longer than chang chickens", which shows that the area around Jianmen Pass at the junction of Sichuan and Shaanxi has a long history of raising chickens.
Legend has it that during the Three Kingdoms period, the Shu Han general Jiang Wei was defeated by the Wei generals Zhong Hui and Deng Ai and retreated to the dangerous Sword Gate Pass. At that time, the soldiers in Jiang Wei's army were tired and could not fight, and the horses were tired and could not ride, and seeing that the sword gate of the northern Shu barrier was in danger, a local official of the sword gate offered a plan to Jiang Wei: retreat for three days without fighting, order the people to slaughter poultry, reward the soldiers with broth, feed the war horses with chicken bones, and wait for the soldiers and horses to recover their physical strength and fight again.
