The London Police said the allegations involved an incident in the City of London on the night of Oct. 24, when Zaman was on improper duty. He "strenuously denied" that he had taken the victim from a pub in Romford, east London, to a luxury hotel on Liverpool Street, where he was accused of rape.

Prosecutors said the defendant approached the woman and persuaded her to go with him to the hotel, the woman was so drunk that she could not agree. The court was informed that the defendant "abused his police authority" by producing his police id card on several occasions, including when booking a hotel room.

At present, the accused has been suspended. His superiors said, "I know the public is worried when they hear that a serving police officer has been charged with such a serious crime. We definitely have the same concerns. When this allegation was reported to us, we acted quickly and fully supported the Continued Thorough Investigation by the Police of the City of London. Zaman has now been indicted and it is important to allow the criminal proceedings to continue. No statement or report should jeopardize the fairness of the proceedings. (Edit: HHJ)
