Yunnan Hundred Flowers Ridge Bird Shoot No. 56: Blue-fronted Red-tailed Plover

The blue-fronted red-tailed plover (scientific name: Phoenicurus frontalis) is 14–16 cm long. The male has a blue forehead and a short eyebrow, and the crown, side of the head, the back of the neck, the side of the neck, the back, the shoulders, the small and middle coverts of the wings, and the chin, throat and upper chest are all black with a blue metallic luster. It feeds mainly on insects such as beetles, locusts, caterpillars, ants, lepidoptera larvae, and also eats a small amount of plant fruits and seeds.

The breeding season is from late May to early August. During the breeding period, it mainly inhabits subalpine coniferous forests and alpine shrub meadows at an altitude of 2000-4200 m, especially in the rocky sparse forest shrubland and gully shrubland areas at the upper edge of the forest line, and mostly descends to the middle and low mountains and foothills in winter.
