Hong Kong, October 31, 2019 -- Starting from this school year, the fourth level of Hong Kong has begun to implement the Civic and Social Development Division (Civics Division), replacing the original General Education Division, and the Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Yang Runxiong, said in a social platform on the 31st that the implementation of the Civics Division has achieved initial results.
Yang Runxiong said that the Civics Department not only strengthens students' knowledge base, so that they can better understand Hong Kong, the country and world issues, but also reduce their examination pressure, and free up class hours to create space for students, so that the entire high school curriculum can be better planned. Thanks to the efforts of the school's co-workers, it now appears that initial results have been achieved.
A few days ago, Yang Runxiong visited Chuangzhi Middle School and learned that the school had carried out comprehensive planning for civics last year, and prepared teaching materials, lesson plans and related learning activities according to the curriculum structure. Yang Runxiong also learned about the learning situation from the students, and Hong Junxi said that in addition to the elements of national education, the civics department also dabbled in the knowledge of other subjects, and the content was very attractive. Ms. Ip felt that the "up to standard" rating of civics could reduce the pressure on the exam, while streamlining the curriculum would allow students to devote time to elective subjects and increase the choice of future paths. Yang Runxiong believes that it can be seen that the students have fully grasped the benefits of civics.
Mr Yeung also revealed that the Education Bureau is providing the necessary support to Civics teachers, including issuing curriculum and assessment guidelines, continuing to organise teacher professional development courses, uploading learning and teaching resources to the Civics Online Resource Platform, establishing an "Applicable Bibliography" and issuing a subsidy of over HK$300,000 to schools this academic year to ensure the smooth implementation of the curriculum. The Education Bureau will also continue to work with schools to implement the purpose of civics through school visits and school visits to promote students' learning effectiveness. (End)
