"Post-00s" undergraduate students published a professional top journal! Jiaotong University "back wave", has strength

Recently, Wang Han, an undergraduate student at the School of Materials Science of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, published a paper as the first author in the journal Advanced Materials, a leading international academic journal in the field of materials science.

Let's take a look at this material "houlang" and his growth process!

About the author

Han Wang, a 2018 undergraduate student in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a member of the F18 Zhiyuan Engineering Honors Program, and a member of the Internationalization Pilot Class of the School of Materials Science.

Academic status: He has won the Hong Kong Dong's Scholarship, Zhiyuan Honorary Scholarship, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Three Good Students, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Outstanding Team Member and other honors.

Science and technology innovation activities: the first prize of the "Qian Xuesen Cup" Scientific and Technological Innovation Competition, the F Prize of the American College Students Mathematical Modeling Competition, was selected as the Zhengzheng Project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the 20th Outstanding Innovation Project.

Origins Zhiyuan Honor Program

By chance, Wang Han met Teacher Song Chengyi in the visiting activities of the Zhiyuan Honor Program, and the conversation was very harmonious, so he entered the research group of Teacher Deng Tao and began his own scientific research road of the Eight Classics.

In the research group, Wang Han mainly studies thermal interface materials, which in layman's terms are a material that helps electronic devices dissipate heat. The computer will generate a lot of heat in the process of use, if it is not dissipated in time, the backlog of heat will have a great impact on the life and efficiency of electronic components. The use of thermal interface materials to fill between the heat dissipation device and the heat generating device can effectively facilitate heat exchange. The material has good application prospects.

Challenging academic paths

For Wang Han, the process of research and publication of this topic is not smooth.

In the initial exploration stage of the project, Wang Han, who had insufficient knowledge and relevant experience, did an experiment for a month and a half, but found that the conclusion had been proved by others. The lack of depth and breadth of the literature made him depressed for a while, but he quickly perked up and realized that he did not balance the time spent on experiments and literature reading. He began to consult a large number of literature and actively consulted his instructors Deng Tao and Song Chengyi. After trial and error, a breakthrough was finally made in the experiment.

Wang Han originally thought that compared with the outstanding experimental results, writing a paper should be a relatively smooth link, but in fact, doing experiments and summarizing his experimental results with logic are completely different things. The day before the deadline, just 30% of the paper's manuscript was completed, he wrote the paper all night while discussing it remotely with his supervisor Song Chengyi online. Wang Han stayed up all night, Teacher Song also stayed up all night, talking about this experience, Wang Han is still very moved.

The most memorable period of the writing process is that the rework of the article coincides with the exam month. Wang Han did experiments during the day, reviewed exams at night, spent a month in the self-study room, returned to the dormitory late at night, and got up again at eight o'clock to go to the laboratory. "It's a problem that can be solved with hard work, so why don't I give it a try?" This belief supported Wang Han to persevere, and finally drew a satisfactory end to the road of this submission.

Grow in retrospective summaries

Talking about this experience, Wang Han summarized several key points of scientific research, and also hoped to encourage the future academic road. One is to be careful, to pay attention to the various experimental phenomena that appear in the experiment, which may be the first step for you to put forward new ideas; the second is to be rigorous, in the experiment, the correct grasp of some irrelevant variables is the quality that must be possessed by an excellent scientific worker; the third is to have a solid theoretical foundation, want to do in-depth and cutting-edge research, without a solid foundation, it is difficult for research to go particularly far.

As an undergraduate, there are many professional courses and tight learning tasks. On the issue of how to balance scientific research and learning, Wang Han also has some thoughts. In the first semester of his junior year, Wang Han immersed himself in experiments from morning to night, leaving little time for study and homework. Even if the exam week is desperately reviewed, the final exam of material physics is still not ideal. So, he adjusted himself, even if he was a little tired, he also adjusted his mentality and body, listened carefully to the lectures, took more notes, and used the homework to review, so that the grades returned to the previous level.

For the new students who have just entered the materials discipline, Wang Han gave his university advice: "No matter what stage you are in now, you must plan your undergraduate four years in advance, and don't wait until the last moment to consider this problem." Having a clear understanding of yourself early on will make your actions no longer blind. While there may not be an exact answer right now, try to think about it. Bring your own knowledge to contact the people or things around you, and believe that one day in the future, you will definitely make a choice that suits you. ”

Introduction to research directions

Liquid metal matrix composites are a class of composite materials composed of liquid metal matrix and high thermal conductivity filler, which has broad application prospects as thermal interface materials.

However, the development of this material also faces many challenges, first of all, because the liquid metal matrix is easy to alloy with most metal fillers, resulting in poor chemical stability of the material. Secondly, the presence of an oxide layer between the matrix and the filler increases the interfacial thermal resistance between the two, hindering the overall thermal conductivity improvement. Although most of the current studies have achieved high thermal conductivity, the stability performance of materials is often unsatisfactory.

This project innovatively uses interface chemistry modification to introduce organic layers into liquid metal composites for the first time. By using 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane on the surface of the copper filler for surface modification, the thermal conductivity and stability of the composite material can be improved at the same time. The results have been published in Advanced Materials, a leading international academic journal in the field of materials science.
