When the final whistle sounded at the Men's Basketball Finals at the Tokyo Olympics, the gold medal had already been pocketed by the United States, and Popovich struggled to control his emotions.
He went with France coach Collette to comfort some French players who could only win silver medals, and his expression did not change until this time.
Then, when he walked past the pitch to his team and saw his coaching staff, he became emotional and hugged the crew deeply, including Ime Udoka, Will Hardy, Cole, Jeff van Gundy, who gave up their summer vacation to help him.
"I'm happy, I've been laughing," Popovich said, adding that a good relationship with the team is more important than winning.
Popovich said he doesn't know exactly how long he can coach, but the final period of his coaching career should be approaching. He'll be 73 in a month, coaching the Spurs for 26 seasons and facing 158 different coaches in the NBA, about half the coach he's coached in the NBA's 75-year history.
His resume is not over, he is a five-time NBA champion, the coach of an Olympic gold medalist, and will become a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame after retiring. And this season, he's the oldest coach in the entire NBA with the youngest generation since he's been in charge.
Although the current Spurs do not have the strength to win the championship, for Popovich, he does not mind so much, he no longer minds why the Spurs do not have superstars in this superstar-dominated league. They've played passionately this season, they've played fast and it's easy, and he says he loves coaching a team like that.
He's still enjoying what he's doing on his own, popovich said: "It's exciting".
How to say it, just like in Tokyo, he is still smiling, he is still coaching.
