Yang Guanxuan (29 May 1925 – 4 January 2008) was a native of Tangli Village, Fenggang Town, Dongguan, Guangdong Province. China's first chess grandmasters, chess national coaches. Proficient in the various layout changes of the middle cannon to the screen horse, the endgame skill is particularly deep, and enjoys the reputation of "King of Southern Cantonese Chess" and "Uncle Demon".
At the age of 6, Yang Guanxuan was famous for his good play in the township, and at the age of 10, he was called "the king of chess in the countryside" by his neighbors. From 1949 to 1951, he worked as a professional chess player in Hong Kong. Since 1951, he has been engaged in chess research and competition in Guangzhou. From 1956 to 1983, he participated in 18 national chess individual championships, won the championship four times, entered the top six in the country 13 times, and won three national team championships for Guangdong team from 1977 to 1982. In 1982, he was awarded the title of the first batch of chess grandmasters in the country. In 1987, he won the "Jianli Cup". In 1999, with an undefeated record, he won the "Elder Cup" and became a veritable chess veteran. In 1999, he was named "one of the top ten outstanding figures in the new Chinese chess world".
Yang Guanxuan has been in the chess world for more than 50 years, and has served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Seventh People's Congress of Guangdong Province, vice chairman of the Chinese Chess Association, head coach of the Guangdong Provincial Chess Team, and editor-in-chief of Guangzhou Xiangqi Magazine. He has trained Lü Qin, Xu Yinchuan, Zhuang Yuting and other chess players; he has authored books such as "Yilin New Compilation", "Records of chess country competition", and "Xiangqi Spring and Autumn".
At 18:30 on January 4, 2008, he died at the first affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou at the age of 83 due to ineffective treatment for colon cancer.
