The guqin, the first of the four arts of "qinqi calligraphy and painting", has always been regarded as a symbol of cultivation and status by literati and doctors. The ancient harp is a comprehensive skill that integrates culture, art, music, aesthetic cultivation and carpentry, lacquer and other techniques. To this day, there are still many harpists who insist on making guqin by hand in ancient methods, and Xu Wenbin, a county-level non-hereditary inheritor of the ancient harp in Pingjiang, is one of them.
Xu Wenbin has been associated with the ancient Fa Xueqin for a long time. In 1905, Mr. Yang Zongji, a native of Hunan, went to Beijing to study guqin, and eventually became a generation of people. In 1928, Xu Wenbin's great-grandfather Yu Shao went to Beijing to learn the piano from Mr. Yang Zongji. There are more than 30 pieces of Yu Shao's harp, and one of them is now in the Hunan Provincial Museum.
Since then, the vein of qinxue has been preserved in Pingjiang through Yu Shao, and it has been inherited in the same vein. Later, Xu Wenbin began to learn guqin through his uncle Yu Anren. After more than ten years of study and research, in 2017, Xu Wenbin became a professional harpist.
The ancient French harp follows the pure hand-made technique of the guqin passed down from ancient times, and each piece of qin is made by dozens of traditional processes such as material selection, shape, digging and tuning, wrapping the summer cloth, putting on the gray tire, painting, polishing, winding, etc., which takes more than a year.
"The implementation of many processes is related to climate, humidity, etc., which will affect the color and timbre of the guqin, and will also affect the service life of the guqin, so it is urgent." In Xu Wenbin's view, the ancient method of cutting the piano is a skill that eliminates speed and efficiency. A "time ruler" is always measuring the mentality, and finally a good piano can be harvested.
The so-called "cut a thousand guqin, there are a thousand kinds of piano tones", the harp is impossible to quantify, each batch, each piano has a slight difference in timbre. Every piano needs inspiration.
In the time of playing, Xu Wenbin has been with the piano for more than ten years, and now, he is still learning the piano with a beginner's mentality, cutting the piano with the heart of a craftsman, and passing on what he has learned to students. In 2018, Xu Wenbin participated in the creation of the "Harp Academy" for public welfare teaching, and in 2019 and 2020, he served as a lecture and teaching teacher of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Class of Guqin Making Skills, a research and training program of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and used actions to inherit and promote the qin rhyme culture that has been passed down through the ages in China.
"The guqin is not only a symbol of traditional culture, in this impetuous era, the soothing, wide and desolate sound of the guqin can make people's hearts precipitate." Xu Wenbin, who has become a county-level non-hereditary inheritor, intends to carry out more activities such as displaying and teaching the harp technique in Pingjiang, promote and disseminate the guqin culture, let more Pingjiang people understand the guqin, become guqin lovers and inheritors, and cultivate their hearts in the quiet and long-distance guqin.
