Why underground "pruning"?
After the lawn grows for a period of time, due to watering, fertilization, trampling, etc., the surface of the lawn is hard, forming a thick layer of dry grass and moss layer, making the turf soil permeable and breathable, and the lawn grass is seriously hypoxic, affecting the normal growth of the lawn and being susceptible to infestation of diseases and insect pests. In this case, measures such as punching holes, scratching the turf, and combing the grass are usually taken to improve the rhizosphere environment. Punching expands the surface area of the soil, increases the contact area between the lawn soil and the atmosphere, removes some of the old roots and overly dense turf grass, promotes gas exchange, improves the ventilation, water absorption and permeability of the soil; is conducive to the growth of microorganisms and reduces harmful substances in the soil; promotes the growth of roots in the cave and the upper branches of the cave roof; can improve the soil properties; the breaking of the solid soil bed can accelerate the decomposition of the lawn dry grass layer and organic residue; improve the response of the flat bed to fertilizer, which is conducive to soil and water conservation.
When to take the underground "pruning"?
Punching also has a certain damage to the lawn, generally takes 2-3 weeks to recover, so the general punching time is carried out during the lawn growth period. Cold-season lawns are generally punched in March-May and August-November, and warm-season lawns are avoided during the dormant period to prevent cold-season weeds from invading.
How does underground "pruning" work?
Lawn grass punching is usually divided into hollow punching and solid punching.
First, the solid punching needle in the hole, the soil squeeze, the pore wall of the soil will be very tight and smooth, especially when the soil is heavy will make the breathability reduced.
Second, hollow punching is better than solid punching machine in the drilling operation, which can loosen the soil and increase the breathability of the lawn; while hitting the earth column, it can cut off part of the grass roots and stems, stimulate the growth of new roots of the lawn, and promote the renewal and rejuvenation of the lawn. Generally, we use this method to drill the lawn. The lawn punching machine can evenly punch holes of consistent depth and size on the turf, and the pore size requirement is 8-15 mm, the depth is 7-10 cm, and the punching density is 36 holes/square meter. Punching machines have small hand-held self-propelled punching machines and large tractor-pulled punching units.
