There have been recent rumors that the Borderlands series will soon launch a spin-off that will bring a different gameplay, and Gearbox is no longer the dominant developer, but a support studio. Gearbox owner Randy Pitchford debunked the rumors, saying that Gearbox will always be the dominant developer of Borderlands games, while denying that there is no such a derivative in development.

Pitchford tweeted: "I was told that there were rumors that we at Gearbox were assisting or co-developing another Borderlands game (or a new spin-off), and none of these rumors were true.
For any game in Borderlands' future, Gearbox will always be the dominant developer and there will be no co-development. We are definitely developing something amazing and I hope it will surprise and delight everyone. ”
After Gearbox was acquired by the Eracer Group, Pitchford said earlier this year that Gearbox would continue to work with publisher 2K, which is expected to continue to release the Borderlands series of games.
