Bugs, because of their odorous glands, can secrete odorous fluid after being stimulated, and are often called "stinky farts". In the early years, it was only a secondary pest of citrus, but with the change of vegetation conditions and the replacement of control measures in orange orchards, it has now become an important pest of citrus fruit loss.

At present, it is the peak of the insect, if it is not prevented and controlled in time, it may cause damage to the new shoots of citrus and the shedding of young fruits. Due to the long life of the insect, the damage period is also long, and in the later stage, it can also endanger near-ripe citrus fruits, causing damage to the fruit surface and affecting sales.

Hazards of bugs to citrus

Bugs are infested by nymphs and adults that suck on leaves, shoots and fruit juice, and unlike stinging pests such as aphids, wood lice, and pest mites, bugs have a stronger injury-making ability due to their large size.

It does not take long for young shoots and young leaves to turn brown and wither, resembling acute anthrax or seedling blight.

After the fruit is damaged, the insect spots at the stinging place are tightened and lignified, and with this as the center, the peel loses green and turns yellow in all directions, and in severe cases, it will fall off in large quantities.

Although the flesh of the affected fruit is relatively intact, after dissection, the internal fruit can be seen to dry and shrink, and the sugar and moisture are reduced compared with normal citrus fruits, chewing like dry residue, and losing its proper flavor.

Main species

Reticulophyllaceae (Pear Net Bug), Marginal Bug Family (Trichophyllaceae), Shield Bug Family (Yellow-backed Shield Bug), Lycopodidae (Nine-Spiced Worm), Bug Family (Great Stink Bug, Cloud Bug, Spot-whiskered Bug, Longnose Bug, Hemp-skin Bug, Rice Green Bug, Tea Wing Bug)

2

Regularity of occurrence

Adult insects overwinter in stone crevices, weeds, and dense canopy, and begin to move after April of the following year, eating and mating, which mainly endangers spring shoots; adult insects will gather eggs on the leaves, and the young nymphs will gather in the hatching place, and only begin to eat after 2 instars; 2 to 3 nymphs often develop in pairs, and after 4 to 5 years of age, they are active alone, and July to August is the largest number of bug nymphs, and it is also the most harmful period of the year, which is most likely to cause fruit drop; the peak reappears in September and October, mainly endangering autumn shoots and fruits.

3

Hazard characteristics

Adult insects have a long lifespan and a long harmful period, occurring between May and October; drought and little rainfall, especially after the drought and autumn drought, are more harmful; the fruit has a strong attraction to the insect after sugar, and the thin-skinned and smooth fruit is more seriously damaged.

Comprehensive prevention and control of bugs

Agricultural control

Clear the garden in winter to reduce the density of insect populations; moderate pruning during the growth period to make the canopy ventilated and transparent; reasonable fertilization to enhance tree potential; protect natural enemies such as Huangjing ants, praying mantises, flat-bellied wasps, jumping wasps, etc.; timely removal when egg leaves or hatching larvae are found during the tour of the garden; and artificial capture in the early morning and evening by taking advantage of the inactive characteristics of adult insects when resting.

Pharmaceutical control

In the spring, summer, autumn shoot stage and near-ripening stage of the fruit to strengthen the insect investigation, seize the nymph peak spray control, the agent can choose high-efficiency cypermethrin, cypermethrin, avermectin and so on.

It is worth noting that not all of the bugs are pests, such as the hunting bugs in the orange grove, which can prey on lepidoptera and Coleoptera larvae to reduce their harm, so don't kill them all with a stick.
