On November 26, the "Heart of the Ocean - Foraminifera Science Exhibition" will be launched at the Municipal Museum. On the morning of the 25th, the exhibition hall on the first floor of the Municipal Museum has been completed, and there are exquisite and small exhibits in each display case, these small exhibits cannot be seen clearly by the naked eye, each small exhibit is equipped with a magnifying glass, and after magnification, it is only the size of a bean grain, and these small exhibits are from 500 million years ago.
This exhibition is an exhibition launched by Shandong Museum, Binzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism and the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, based on the latest scientific research achievements of the team of academician Zheng Shouyi of the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the exhibition is divided into four units: blue sea, understanding foraminifera, heart of the ocean and "little giant" in the sea. "This exhibition, one is to popularize marine knowledge to the public, and the other is that our province is focusing on building a strong marine province, and the marine exhibition is an important part of it." Introduction of binzhou museum staff.
Foraminifera are shelled or shellless, single-celled animals composed of a clump of protoplasm belonging to the protozoal kingdom granulocons Phylum Foraminifera. Foraminifera has a history of more than 500 million years since the Cambrian Period, there are more than 40,000 known fossil species, more than 6,000 species of living species, the vast majority of which are marine species, camp benthic or planktonic life, because of its shell surface or shell mouth on one or more openings, different chambers often have holes on the next door, so it is named foraminifera.
Foraminifera single adult cells are as small as 0.02 mm and as large as 110 mm, making it the largest and most diverse group of protozoa. As a superior indicator of the ancient and modern marine environment, foraminifera is widely used in scientific research fields such as paleo-oceanography, biostratigraphy and paleoclimatology, and is known as the "little giant in the sea".
How to present a foraminifera with an average size of only 1 mm to the audience is a difficult problem. Shandong Museum invites relevant experts to overcome difficulties together, from scanning electron microscopy to ultra-depth of field microscopy to microscopy to micrography, and strive for the perfect set of science and art. Zheng Shouyi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, carved one by one foraminifera that were originally only visible under the microscope into today's some like shells, some like clay pots, some like whistles, some like garlands, vividly presented in front of the public's eyes, becoming scientific research teaching aids, popular science exhibits, tourist souvenirs and large sculptures that people can see and touch today.
"Heart of the Ocean - Foraminifera Science Exhibition" exhibits more than 100 foraminifera specimens, nearly 40 specimen enlarged models, and more than 100 plates, showing the artistic beauty, diversity, adaptability and environmental significance of foraminifera and their shells from multiple angles. Through the exhibition, the audience can recognize and understand the "strange" foraminifera, and strengthen the marine consciousness and scientific awareness while appreciating the beauty of the foraminifera and lamenting the magic of creation.
During the exhibition, the public can enter the museum for free with their ID card, and the Binzhou Museum is open from 9:00 to 17:00 every day (the museum is open normally on Saturdays and Sundays, and closed on Mondays).
