Europe's energy crisis triggers the EU version of "My Sun"

The European Union has invested millions of dollars in propellers and solar panels in the hope of vigorously harnessing solar or wind energy to alleviate the energy crisis.

The European energy crisis has caused gas prices to soar, and EU officials have blamed the surge in gas prices for insufficient efforts to introduce renewables. Vladimir Chizhov, Russia's permanent representative to the European Union, said it was best to have reserve capacity for countries that chose to abandon nuclear and coal as a focus of their energy policy.

On the sidelines of the 14th Eurasian Economic Forum in Verona, Italy, Chizov said: "Russia is not responsible for the energy crisis in Europe, and the responsibility for energy policy lies with those people."

He added, "If you invest millions of euros in propellers and solar panels, hopefully the sun will be brighter and the wind will blow in the desired direction at the speed you want, but that's certainly not the case, maybe ridiculous."

"For the foreseeable future, in the long run, on those unfortunate days without wind and without the sun, they will need natural gas," he said.

Chizov's remarks come as the prices of natural gas, coal, oil and electricity soared not only in Europe but around the world. The current energy crisis is often attributed to the rebound in the global economy after the pandemic.

On October 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Russian state-owned gas producers to increase their natural gas inventories in Europe.

On October 18, the gas injection work of the 1 branch line of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline has been completed and is waiting for EU approval.

As soon as it is approved, Russia can immediately send about 17.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe. This will alleviate the crisis of heating demand in Europe this autumn and winter. This positive news also led to a 4.4% drop in the price of Dutch TTF natural gas futures on the 28th compared with the previous day.
