In an isolation ward of the Fourth People's Hospital of Ningxia, a designated hospital for the treatment of new crown pneumonia in Ningxia, a 3-year-old patient watched cartoons and played games accompanied by a nurse aunt.

"The child is young, and the parents are not around, in addition to treating the disease, our medical team has to take on the responsibility of taking care of her life, feeding medicine and playing." Fortunately, the child is particularly well-behaved, in addition to occasionally thinking of his parents crying his nose, he is also quite cooperative. Wang Hui, a pediatrician at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University, said.

As of 24:00 on the 28th, 26 confirmed cases have been reported in this round of epidemic in Ningxia, of which the oldest is 81 years old and the youngest is only 3 years old. All confirmed cases have been transferred to the Fourth People's Hospital of Ningxia for centralized isolation and treatment.

"After the outbreak of the epidemic, in accordance with the deployment of the autonomous regional party committee, government and epidemic prevention and control headquarters, we selected experts specializing in respiratory, severe disease, traditional Chinese medicine and hospital sense from the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine to be stationed in the designated hospital for the first time to carry out treatment work." Zhou Wei, head of the expert treatment team for new crown pneumonia in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and vice president of the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University, said.

As the growth rate of the current round of epidemic cases in Ningxia far exceeds that of the epidemic at the beginning of last year, the Autonomous Region Health Commission has quickly added "fresh blood" to the treatment team. At present, in the whole team, the number of expert group members has increased from the initial 8 to more than 20, and the backbone of front-line doctors has exceeded 50.

"This time the patients are infected with delta variants, the virus load is high, the infectivity is strong, the course of the disease is also fast, as long as there is a high fever above 39 degrees Celsius, the lesions on the lungs will soon disperse, which is a great test for medical staff." Zhou Wei said.

However, these medical staff are basically "veterans" in dealing with the new crown virus. Under the guidance of the rescue and treatment experts and hospital infection experts dispatched by the joint prevention and control mechanism of the State Council to Ningxia, combined with the experience of treatment last year, they gave each patient a treatment measure such as close monitoring, antiviral treatment combined with traditional Chinese medicine dialectical treatment, treatment of basic diseases and psychological intervention.

"At present, everyone's condition is relatively stable, most of them are mild and ordinary, only the first case of Ai Moumou is slightly more serious, and the condition has been alleviated after timely adjustment of the treatment plan." Zhou Wei said.

Reducing critical cases and eliminating deaths is the goal of the entire treatment team. Zhou Wei told reporters that last year he led the team to conduct a detailed study of the condition of 75 confirmed cases in Ningxia, and found that to reduce critical cases, it is necessary to intervene in a timely and effective manner when patients develop into severe diseases, and once they develop into severe diseases, the difficulty and the price paid will increase exponentially.

"Two consecutive days of high fever, rapid increase in suprapulmonary lesions and a sudden decrease in blood oxygen saturation or lymphocyte ratio are all important indicators of disease development, at which time the expert group will immediately organize consultations, adjust the treatment plan, and generally speaking, the disease can be reversed again soon." Zhou Wei said.

Therefore, in this round of the epidemic, while all patients are closely monitored, medical staff are also focusing on elderly patients over 60 years old and young patients. For example, for this 3-year-old patient, Ningxia dispatched 5 doctors and 5 nurses to form a special class for treatment, which was "online" for 24 hours.

"The child was admitted to the hospital on October 23, when he not only had a fever, but also symptoms such as cough, runny nose and nasal congestion. After a week of treatment, she has not had a fever for more than 50 hours, her cough is improving, and her mental state is improving. As medical staff, we are very happy and will definitely do our best to let her be cured and discharged from the hospital and reunited with her parents as soon as possible. Wang Hui said.

Zhou Wei told reporters that in addition to the existing medical strength, the Ningxia health department has also reserved a group of experts and front-line medical personnel, and has prepared the equipment needed for medical treatment, including artificial membrane lung (ECMO) for the treatment of critically ill patients.

"The expert group has made all preparations for another increase in cases or the emergence of critical cases, and we are confident of winning this battle against the virus." Zhou Wei said. (Reporters Wang Lei and Ai Fumei)
