On the evening of December 21, 2017, Ms. Zhao was electrocuted and fell to the ground while bathing with an electric water heater in a rental house. Later, after investigation by the public security organs, it was determined that Ms. Zhao died of electric shock.
During the trial, the appraiser of the electrical installation project of the rental house said that although there were multiple safety hazards in the electricity environment of the rental house, when the on-site appraisal was made, no leakage of electricity was found, and the accident was associated with the problem of the failure of the leakage switch.
The staff of the electric water heater appraisal agency said that there is no quality problem in the electric water heater except for the grounding measures and leakage protectors that do not meet the requirements. The existence of defects in the leakage protection switch may lead to the accident, but the fact is that the water heater does not leak electricity, and it is impossible to judge whether the accident is caused by a problem with the leakage protection switch.
After the first and second instances of the case, the court finally found that the electric water heater manufacturer did not need to bear any responsibility, and the owner of the rental house should bear 70% of the responsibility for Ms. Zhao's death and pay 35,000 yuan for mental damage.
Combined with the proportion of liability, the court ordered that the owner of the rental house should compensate the plaintiff for death compensation, funeral expenses, living expenses for dependents, and consolation payments for mental damage totaling more than 970,000 yuan.

Precautions for the use of electric water heaters

The power supply of the electric water heater must have a reliable grounding wire, and the household power supply system must have a leakage protection device.

A fixed three-eye socket must be used, and the fire, zero, and ground wires are connected in the correct position.

The location of the power outlet should be set in a place where running water cannot be splashed, and use a waterproof outlet.
