Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center Humanistic Light Performance Season Repertoire, the drama "Dream of the Red Chamber", adapted by national first-class screenwriter Yu Rongjun based on Cao Xueqin's classic masterpiece, premiered at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center Art Theater on the evening of September 2.
The drama "Dream of the Red Chamber", produced by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center, was presented for the first time in the form of a full-book performance, which consisted of the upper part "Spring and Summer, Wind and Moon Prosperity" and the lower part "Autumn and Winter, Eating All the Birds", and the whole performance lasted about 6 hours, spanning four seasons, full of the vicissitudes of the years.
<h4>True and false, rise and fall, dreams and reality are intertwined, and the drama presents the classic people and things in "Dream of the Red Chamber" from a unique perspective, creating a poetic and real world. On September 2, the first premiere of the upper part of "Dream of the Red Chamber" "Spring and Summer, Wind and Moon Prosperity", and the premiere of the lower part "Autumn winter and eat all the birds" on September 3. Based on the original work, the drama is read and interpreted from the perspective of contemporary people to think, think, choose, and express, and use this as a communication with contemporary audiences. The story in the play is not separated from the original work, it is a synthesis, condensation and reorganization of the original storyline, a history, two major families, Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, Xue Baochao's three-person friendship and the fate of all sentient beings are all very critical and classic parts of the play.
Opening
The original "Dream of the Red Chamber" is a rare novel that first says the ending and then the original commission. The same is true of the drama "Dream of the Red Chamber", where the audience can see the fate and ending of some characters at the beginning or in the play.
<h4>However, the structure and form of expression of drama and novel are different, and the way of telling stories is also different. "Dream of the Red Chamber" contains Chinese traditional Oriental philosophy and is a great tragedy in the true sense. It reflects the confrontation between people's free will and irresistible fate in survival, experiencing setbacks in confrontation, feeling nothingness in failure, introspecting themselves because of their perceptions, and obtaining liberation and detachment.
The root of literature and art is that "people" are the center of everything, and Jia Baoyu experiences the rebellion of the "people" spirit and the internal conflict of the deep cultural environment. This deep conflict, to this day, is still one of the factors of anxiety and uneasiness in contemporary people, and people's reading today is a kind of face, experience the purification of tragedy, and find the possibility of spiritual detachment. The direction of the drama "Dream of the Red Chamber" is to try to open the spiritual world of "Dream of the Red Chamber", establish expressive psychological time and space in the theater, reflect the appearance of life and psychological reality, show the spiritual map of a sentient being, and pursue the inner spiritual integrity of "Dream of the Red Chamber". <h2>Stage: An all-round way to open the Chinese aesthetic</h2>
The stage of the drama "Dream of the Red Chamber" presents a "Chinese minimalist style" to the audience.
The stage design is from Liu Xinglin's hand, the entire stage with white as the main tone, three huge "white walls" with the plot open and close, like three sides of the open book, there are some clever settings, such as the iron structure set on the hollow text is from the "Dream of the Red Chamber" poem "Good Song", such as the flying "falling red", and such as exquisite wooden palanquins, carved tables and chairs, pavilions and so on.
In "Dream of the Red Chamber", the statement that "the land is really clean after falling into a white expanse" is not only the end of the story, but also means that there is and is not in the world, and it is good to have a continuous cycle. Liu Xinglin said that from the beginning, this point is taken as a concept or visual theme of stage design, and then transformed into a specific time and space structure, and based on this, it carries the actors' actions as flexibly as possible, suggests scenes that are synchronously converted with the jumping narrative, and presents a metaphor like a dream.
In addition, the music, lighting and costumes of the drama "Dream of the Red Chamber" are tailor-made for the play. The music created by composer Qi Feng takes the dream as the theme, and under the rendering of the music, he follows the plot to lead the audience into a new "dream in the Red Chamber". In the white stage set, the lighting design Tan Hua uses his aesthetic lighting language to create a dreamlike scene.
All the character costumes in this play are white, and they are cut and designed in a modern and simple way on the basis of classical Chinese costumes. Traditional Chinese fabrics such as silk and ramie are used extensively in the play. Costume designer Yang Donglin said that "no scale" is his aesthetic tone setting for this character modeling creation. The Rongning Erfu, which is the most true and good in Bao Yu's heart, is "spotless", and it is also the pure land and ideal country that he hopes will never be eroded by the world. White seems simple, but it is all-encompassing - tea white, moon white, tooth white, silk color, etc. According to the identity, personality, and fate of the characters, supplemented by cinnabar, crimson, daisy, crow green and other colors, it is intended to construct the unique aesthetic world view of this version of the drama "Dream of the Red Chamber" and lead the audience to think: fate is uncertain, how should we face this pale and powerless sense of fate.
For all the creators of the drama "Dream of the Red Chamber", facing the adaptation and interpretation of this Chinese classic masterpiece, it is a great challenge, from the pre-workshop, to the rehearsal until now it is officially staged, the crew has been exploring and pursuing its own unique stage presentation, hoping to live up to the audience's expectations.
